Oda does kill characters, but he likes their deaths to have a purpose. Pell pulling away the bomb to save everyone and surviving doesn't change what he did for the people, but Ohara living or Bellemere not dying would negate the motivations of Robin or Nami's future.
Monet and Vergo being dead isn't necessary because stopping them in the moment works just as well as killing them. It's like how he saved the G-5 (was it G-5? Oh whatever I don't care enough to look) marines who sacrificed themselves for Tashigi and Smoker. It showed they didn't just fear but respected their commanders, but they didn't have to die for it.

it'd be kind of weird to write because either the supernova would lose and not be a supernova in the first place (unless they would have ran or something) or the supernova would win like luffy and there would be some shit going down like what happened with moria and croc
still an interesting little piece of oda's magnificent world that seems to be lacking - the shichibukai are basically all luffy's m8s or been ran over and they've had little interaction with the other contenders

Well, keep in mind that although obstacles should make pirates stronger, many of them don't necessarily get the most experience of "powerups" from battles. Someone like Zoro has gotten power spikes in the heat of battle, but someone like Luffy has grown strong after the fact and off-screen, such as him developing Gear Fourth over time in order to deal with giant animals. Not even other pirates, but other animals. Additionally, you have people like Blackbeard who just become immensely powerful in unique ways.
