The point is, all they have is medieval era technology. So basically torches and oil lamps. Their "decently advances civilization" is not that of Renessainse, but of early medieval - no gunpowder, streets dark at night, shit sea navigation, diseases treated with fake "herbalist" medicine (of which Shirayuki is part) with no real medical science.

Not even gas lamps. Shurayuki and her research team came up with idea to use a poisinous flower that produces light when it blooms. Problem - it also kills everyone around.

So they had to first research how to remove poison, then how to make it bloom all the time so combined with some fantasy mineral.

Now lamps with those can produce light for long period of time and thus can be used where normal ones cant since for example you`d had to replace oil in lamps all the time. First use is to light roads, so people can travel at nights.

Separation might be good for character development, Sayunkoku did it too - the problem, rather handling it as timeskip: they made more material of Zen and Shirayuki being apart than total number of chapters before, and half the chapters instead of romantic developments became Attelier game adaptation with fake herbal science research and problems.

They still see each other on some events , but thats just "reunion" chapter after end of each ark, where they next one separated again.

This isn't close to being my favorite shoujo as I think the characters are a little too perfect (I get that it's supposed to be like a fairytale), but seeing this at the end was kind of sad. Likelihood of seeing these characters animated again and interacting with other pretty slim. Sounds like reading the manga will be taxing, but I guess I have no choice.

The thing is the show is so vanilla that there isn't that much to talk about. It's nice and cute, but as I've criticize before, the characters are too perfect, and even the conflicts are too clean to draw out major discussion. There really isn't much too suspense for things.

It's the last episode, so I don't really want to derail the thread with comparisons to other series.

At the end of the day, I'd give the series a solid 7 or maybe 7.5. The more I listen to the OST and nostalgic down the line, I might watch it again and bump it up.
