I just sent the Legend of the Galactic Heroes guide to a friend and realized that it was sorely out of date. I tried to do something about that, and made an updated version if anyone would find this worth having.
I removed the bits about unfinished subtitles because everything is now subtitles, and hard to find subs because it's all a quick google away now.
I updated the extras section to include the new novel translations, the new manga, and the upcoming new anime.
I also removed the bit at the top saying you can find the series on /rs/ or other torrent sites. Just because I feel like you shouldn't be trying to get somebody who doesn't even know how to torrent anime a guide for a series like this.

It will most likely be based on the new manga. It seems odd that a new manga would come out just before the new anime and for the projects to not be connected.
Arslan, which is also based on Yoshiki Tanaka novels, got the same treatment so it makes sense.

It was for me, get on that and avoid spoilers. It transcended the genre and changed the way I look at fiction, and I don't say those things lightly.
LoGH is the only anime I've ever seen that is just too good for anime. Every other anime pales in comparison to it so much that it just doesn't feel fair for them to be considered the same thing.
I envy anyone watching it for the first time.

Judging by the new manga, I'd fear the worst. I'm excited for the new series nonetheless, but if the new manga is anything to go by we can expect anime tropes to be very prevalent.
There's a couple I can think of that are better, but LoGH is by far the best in its genre.

I've seen a lot of anime and I'm going to have to disagree with you completely. I don't think any anime is better than Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and I don't think any anime really competes with it in terms of scale and maturity. LoGH isn't mature because it has gore, and a slow political story with wordy dialogue. There's a way it presents itself that is just very mature, for lack of a better term.
I am ALWAYS open to suggestions though.

LoGH is about the war between two factions. A autocratic Galactic Empire, and a democratic Free Planets Alliance rebelling against said empire. The story is primarily told from the perspectives of two characters: In the Empire we have Reinhard von Lohengramm, a passionate young brat with a great ambition to be the Emperor himself. And in the Alliance, Yang Wen-Li, a humble wannabe historian who can't escape war no matter how hard he tries because of his incredibly gifted abilities as a fleet commander.
There's dozens of other excellent characters on each side, and neither side is portrayed as the villain or the hero. It's just people fighting for their leaders and their ideals.

It's consistent. As a space opera series it doesn't care for real space physics, and emulates naval battles instead. Without Star Trek-style broadsiding mind you. The guns are mounted on the front of LoGH warships.
Corridors and walls exist in space, apparently. Specifically two corridors between each faction, which serve as important choke points that prevent all out invasions. One corridor is controlled by a neutral faction called Phezzan, the other an Imperial fortress (cough death star) called Iserlohn.
If real life physics and accuracy are something that matters to you, this might bother you. But the series portrays it convincingly and clearly sets the rules without breaking them.
If you like military tactics and strategy, space opera like Star Trek/Wars, and lengthy complex plots with lots of characters (a la Monster, Game of Thrones, War & Peace). Then LoGH is your wet dream.
