Speaking of Gonzo deaths, I don't think I've ever seen something go down so hard. One year it's selling well and there's an anime in the works, and then the next year the anime's been cancelled, the studio's bankrupt, the manga's rushed to an end, and the author's dead.

I dropped Shangri-La while it was airing, picked it up and got a little more than halfway through it last year, and then I just sort of stopped. Things were happening, I guess, our girl was getting along with the young lieutenant, the loli had done something crazy about world finance again, but I just stopped. And there were really cool moments, everything in the jungle, that time they invade the arcology and get wiped out by hologram monsters, psychicloli's Heian parade, but it didn't make a compelling whole.

Oh, sorry, I wasn't in the conversation before, I just wanted to talk about Shangri-La. The mixture of poorly understood social commentary, near-future mid-apocalypse setting, and a crazy little girl that will rip you apart with her mind if you lie to her, is the kind of thing that keeps me coming back to anime. I just wish they had put it together better, like, I guess, like Bones does. Gonzo was always a cheap knockoff of Bones. Even though they started as a cheap knockoff of Gainax.

And I don't mean Bones makes good shows. Everything they make falls apart in the sequel if it doesn't fall apart at the end, but it happens so memorably and the good parts are so good we remember it. Gonzo's best show was Last Exile, and you can hardly tell it isn't Bones sometimes.
