I will say a large portion of the anime watching community are rather thick and think themselves in some exclusive club, for some odd reason. It becomes extremely apparent when obvious story telling techniques completely goes over people's heads; for example back in the day, maybe 10% of people even theorised (without playing the VNs) that Archer was Shirou, but it was extremely obvious with the scene play that had between each of them, if you didn;'t know by the time he summoned the blades you were a complete and utter retard and probably had a real hard time completing highschool education.
My point being, most "normalfags" are probably smarter than most anime fans and don't need to watch 500 anime to get a decent knowledge base of what anime tropes are and etc.

More like just clever and generally entertaining, especially when they're not spelled out for the audience, which SZS does so it's less clever. I find sketch comedies a lot funnier, along with really well done manzai routines. Anime in general is formulaic so what makes it good is strong execution of the routine, which generally means exceptional art/animation and seiyuu voice acting for proper comedic timing for visual/spoken gags.
Gintama actually pulls off some really funny gags some times, but the show is so hit or miss I can't really recommend it as a great comedy. Some stuff just falls flat, in the "yeah I get it but I ain't laughing" way.

As a Canadian, I find Japanese humor to be a nice, refreshing change from what Canadians call "comedy."

It's called a manzai routine. The joke isn't the idiot being an idiot, it's the guy reacting to the idiot. If done well, it's hysterical. But a lot of shows just go through the motions and it doesn't really hit the right notes. Most shounen series will do forced tsukkomi moments that just feel tedious after a while, cause the author's forte isn't really comedy so they don't have that many good joke ideas.

The show attracts normalfags? That's hard to know but of the Japanese anime/manga crowd I'd agree.
We have no way of knowing what it attracts for foreigners, but my anecdotal experience is that I did not enjoy Gintama as much until I paused it for three years and watched/read more.
Either way it's a funny and good work of art to most people.

It's less awful in manga. In anime the have to play "funny" music when a gag happens and that's as awful as sitcom laughing.
Also it's a way to safe money. Action must be fluid and is expensive to make. A 2 frame "joke" is cheap.

nice theory but doesn't explain jews, the smartest race, who are renowned for their humor. brits also have a history of decent intellectual humor (pg wodehouse, monty python, black adder, the office, etc). there are races and subgroups that are more intelligent without being more autistic.
