The author himself apologized for the manga ending how it did, but he said that after his daughter's comments he just lost his inspiration. He was hoping for the show to rekindle it, and they even made that little Blame! sequence, just for him, to encourage him, but it wasn't enough.

Most artists would have some conviction or confidence in their work though. Certainly not to let a comment about it not being a popular as AoT hit them too hard.
