That's the point. It was a terrible and ugly event perpetrated by a person who stewed in bitterness and resentment for years. It could destroy Konatsu if she remembered accurately what really happened, since she pushed her own mother to her death. There's still a sort of romantic angle in that Miyokichi was still pining for Kiku, but in a twisted kind of way.
Kiku dressed it up and hid the truth to spare her, since all of the show is within the frame that he's telling it to Yotaro and Konatsu.

I think this might be a first for me. Usually when I read ahead on a manga after enjoying an anime adaptation, what I find ranges between mild disappointment and complete and utter train wrecks that manage to ruin what came before them.
