That's also why he thinks you need lots if life experience as a good storyteller. You can replicate other peoples stories and do a fine job with that, but no one else can live the life you have lived. That gives you access to things that are just more than dreams and fantasies.

I saw Hayao Miyazaki at a grocery store in Tokyo yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, "ああ、あなたは今のようにやっていますか？" I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "ハァッ？ハァッ？ハァッ？" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw Miyazaki trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen academy awards in his hands without earning them. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be retired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the awards and started SCANNING it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "任意の電気infetterenceを防止します," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each award and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by telling her it was a mistake really loudly.

I think he's just really weird. He's really hit or miss as a director but as a person he's pretty hard to read. He might just be too old to make any sense at this point.
I don't think there's a single director with a better track record, certainly no one with as big a massive winning streak as his from Lupin in '79 all the way to Spirited Away in '01. Hell the only movie of his I'd say was no good was Howl's (though I haven't seen Wind Rises or Porco, but I hear good things).
