What the fuck happened here? I mean, I'd like to think I can understand deep plot, but what the fuck? Someone please help?

A shame you seemed an honest man.

How much time do you spend online in the average day?
>>
it's a story about disassociative identity disorder watered down with a bunch of crap and meaningless pseudo-intellectual symbolism
>>
>>138973737
She was an overimaginative girl that killed herself because she thought the world would be better without her.
>>
>>138973863
Then what about the aliens and shit and wtf?

>>138973912
I thought this too at first, but then I kind of had the feeling it had something to do about.. you know, the internet? Or the Wired? Since the whole story revolves around it.

>>138973961
So she just imagined all that shit and then killed herself? Why would she think the world is better off without her?
>>
>>138974051
>I kind of had the feeling it had something to do about.. you know, the internet?
just a vessel for telling the story

it was the late 90s and dial-up modems and dot-com stuff was cool
>>
>>138974051
>So she just imagined all that shit and then killed herself?
Well think of it as just a over embellishment of what it was like for her to use the web.
>Why would she think the world is better off without her?
because she spread a rumor about her friend and ruined her life?
>>
>>138974086
I guess that's really all it is then, thanks. A part of me wanted to really like it for trying to tell a deep story, but it's just so scattered and fucked up I just want to say it's incomprehensible bullshit and shrug it off.
>>
>>138974204
Oh, I get it. All the aliens and shit and government conspiracies and stuff is shit on the internet. I can understand that part.
>>
>>138973737
It is all about context. At a time where the internet was beginning to affect life on a global scale, the possibilities for browsing the net were mind-boggling. SEL is centered around a fantastical concept: Technology has advanced to the point where digitizing life itself is possible. Every person with acess to the wired has in essence, oh wonder of wonders, two personas: a real world persona and a wired persona. The line between the real world and the wired becomes blurry, as indicated by the suicide of the girl in the first episode (net rumors that grow exponentially and become regarded as truths), Lain's sister dying but still existing in the wired, the ayy lmaos (they may have done this just to be weird, like SEL likes to do often, but I think this pertains mostly to E.T.s gathering info on humans via the net), and the guy that claims to be God.

For some reason, Lain's wired identity becomes sentient and realizes that it can become a god, which is why that other fag gets BTFO; the point being made is that there is no need for a God in real life if you can do anything in the wired. That's why random people always tell Lain that they saw her in the wired doing crazy shit.

Remember those shadows with purple dots and shit? That is a physical manifestation of the wired's influence on the real world.

Welcome to Lain my nigger. Perhaps a second screening is in order before you enter into the many competing theories of thematic, literal and metaphorical meaning.

Its important to keep in mind that there are several Lain's throughout the series that represent different aspects of her personality, and that Lain goes through several transitions between her physical earthly self and her "Wired" metaphysical self. Its only at the end that she truly abandons her flesh and erases all memory of her existence from humanity. It got so confusing for the director and seiyuu they had to write the name of the different 'aspects" of Lain in kanji, katakana, and romaji.

Normal Lain on the left is her usual shy, meek self. The middle one is her snarky, forceful self that Alice and her friends first glimpse at Cyberia, and right is le ebin shitposting Lain that trolls the fuck out of Alice later on.
>>
>>138974430
Lain exists only within people's memories. She is not omnipotent or omniscient.
>>
>>138975162
If she erases her existence from the world, how can she exist in people's memories?
>>
>>138975162
>>138975311
Rewatch the show, specifically when it talks about time 'before, now, later'

Anon is right that Lain exists in a multitude of forms in the conciousness of every individual though. Just got to take the final step. Understand what was beyond the wired and who the dad was at the end.
>>
>>138975622
the dad was m00t
>>
>>138975622
>who the dad was at the end
who was he?
>>
>>138975622
who was dad then?
>>
>>138975622
Lain just chose on which person she remains in their memories. The dad and her school friend were the last.

Are you trying to say that the Dad and Arisu killed themselves? I can see why Arisu would, because of the rumor, but why the Dad? Is the Dad the creator of lain, the guy who died on the track?
>>
>>138976046
No I am saying the girl who killed herself in the earlier episodes is shown alive as of the final episode after Lain's intervention creating a situation where the phrase 'memories' might have a broader definition or implication than it has been given my many posters.

It's just an average person on 4chan. You are seeing the progressive steps they take is all. Shy and reserved, progressing into cynical and snarky, and finally full on asshole troll.

I wouldn't say it's depressing some threads are much better than others.
Where do you discuss it?

>>138976824
>not understanding even one of the many layers and interpretations
At the very least it has the technology commentary as well as it's literal AI internal narrative
At best it has far more internal interpretations, structural metaphors and implications, as well as thematic commentaries.
You get out what you put in.

Wait, when did she kill herself? Is this from some other source? Because I didn't see any of that in the anime
>>
>>138977550
Was this meant to be in response to anything?

The posts around people killing themselves are about a girl in their class. She dies in like the first or second episode as a way of introducing the weird Lain based delusions some people suffered.

She is back in the final episode after Lain decides to directly interfere with things. You see her in a shot of Lain's friend turning up to school IIRC

I feel the same with Utena.

Lain is an AI, or a sort of cyborg. In the show, the internet manages to become linked to a resonance of the Earth, and therefore can't be shut off, this means that all human consciousness became linked into the internet, and Lain got control over the internet. As for whether she is omnipotent, she is omnipotent to everyone on Earth, but her powers only extend to completely alter the perception and memory of anyone on Earth. This means she can make pretty much anything effectively happen, but I still think that if aliens were to come and observe Earth from a distance, they might see something totally different than everyone on Earth does.
