>Shame the show is bad.
How so? It had great characters, a great dynamic between Birdy and Tsutomu, and great action.
Birdy has such a great design.
Is there a Birdy viewing guide? There seems to be more than one series
>>138974515
Let's be honest the characters are very cliched, to the point that you sort of know everything they're going to say before it happens.
The main reason to watch Birdy is to actually watch Birdy and the fights.

Tetsuwan Birdy 7/10
Birdy Decode 6/10
Birdy Decode movie forgot title 5/10
Bridy Decode 2 5/10

>>138976412
It's pretty straightforward my man. There's the OVA series from the 90's and then there's Decode which is two cours split into season 1 and 2.
Most of the Birdy webm material you see comes from Decode but defo peep the OVAs if you're looking to get into birdy.

>Not liking S2 more than S1
How do I know you have shit taste?
>>138976532
Decode S2 was superior to S1 though.
>>138976499
All characters are based on archetypes. It's the execution that matters. I haven't seen a show that's done a friendship theme as well as Birdy has. The relationship between her and Tsutomu was a a rare platonic friendship between a male and female MC and was one of the most meaningful relationships I've seen in any media.
I remember watching Decodedubbeda few years back. Liked it.
>>138976532
The OVA was an 8 at least (i'd personally call it a 9).
Decode was far better than you give it credit for.

>>138977402
It was only iffy for a couple of scenes.
Decode had one of the best soundtracks ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_Y4OIWGr4w
Posting some pasta from another OST thread:
I have yet to hear anything that tops Yugo Kanno's soundtrack for Birdy The Mighty. The orchestral pieces are majestic, sweeping, and absolutely gripping. The rock/electronic pieces combine thrashing guitars with forceful drum 'n' bass beats to emphasize urgency. And finally, there are peaceful, poppy tracks which combine live instruments with electronica to create this warm, urban sound.
Yet another reason why Birdy was such an under-appreciated series.
SIDE Birdy is just fantastic. The piano opening, then the upbeat electronic and string sections kick in, then back to the piano and DAT SWEET SAX.
I don't have the best vocabulary when describing music, but it has this sense of heart-racing adventure, yet there's something familiar about it. You'd think the saxaphone would make it sound dated, but it doesn't. It just sounds so vibrant and exciting and it fits in perfectly. And it's just so idio syncratic with the show. I can't imagine Birdy jumping around Tokyo to any other piece of music, just like I can't imagine Superman without John Williams' signature theme.
SIDE Tsutomu is very heavy on the brass section, and when it almost sounds like it belongs in a 90's playstation RPG, but that makes perfect sense when you consider his role in the series. He's the young, naive protagonist about to embark on a grand adventure with his mysterious new friend. It's a little more understated than Birdy's theme, but that's appropriate too. Birdy is the flashy, bombastic one of the pair (with her more somber side as signified by the piano), but Tsutomu is the one being introduced to this grand universe.

The edgy childhoodfriend was such a shit character that he snuffed out the possibility of a third season, just like the characters he killed in the story.
Sauce?
I don't know what exactly it is about her but Decode Birdy's body is the most sementacular in all the galaxy. It doesn't hurt that she's virtually naked.
>>138981296
Well in the manga:Birdy is canonically one of the most attractive, physically superior members of her race, so much so that the dying Alterian Emperor wants her to be the mother of his heir. She refuses and Gomez helps her escape.

I also hate the way they retconned her older sister into a robot.

I liked how stark and violent Tsutomu's death was in the OVA, but I also liked the light show in Decode.
>>138981045
>he snuffed out the possibility of a third season
Only because he killed chances of those otaku fucks self inserting and denying them their Birdy waifu. The jap fans are the real problem. They're the ones who keep the studios from making good things. Otherwise we'd have had A third season of Birdy as well as following seasons of Moribito.
>>138981671
He was a thoroughly unpleasant character to watch though. Whenever I think of rewatching Birdy again, I remember I'd have to sit through his antics again.

It had nothing to do with budget. A lot of the weird-looking shots came from the talented young animators who were working on the show. The director decided to give them lot of freedom in animating.
>>138972855
What order do you watch this series in?
Should i watch the OVAs that came out before the tv show, or is it just the same thing in OVA format?

OVA is a whole different beast based on a completely different incarnation of the manga with the only similarities being the first two villains and how Birdy/Tsutomu get stuck with each other.
I'd say watch it first since it's better in almost every regard but Decode also has some nice points.

http://www.pelleas.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4317#p4317
It's not just the finale but rather the animators were given a lot of freedom to draw as they liked.
>Nakaya: Generally speaking, I think it's neccessary to have unity on a 30 minute film. However, it was terrific to watch Part B. It made me re-think my stance a bit, like “if it’s interesting, maybe anything goes”.... but that’s just me. What do you think, as the character designer?
>Ryochimo: Of course, I understood that this might cause some controversy. But once you actually step foot on the production floor, you come to realize how important it is for the animators to be motivated. I wanted the audience to be able to feel the animators' energy. Naturally, all kinds of people watches the show, so I’m fully aware that the extent to which that gets through to the viewers will depend largely on their own standards.
>>138988410
>>138988539
And some thoughts about the animation from the director himself.
http://www.pelleas.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=711
>As I work with young animators such as Ryochimo, I feel that we reaffirmed the underlying power held by animation. For people like Ryochimo, (Shingo) Yamashita, and others, --whom they call themselves as Web generation, but I see them as Dojinshi generation who became professional through amateur works-- I thought I should let them work freely as possible without forcing one method. Then, I brought in veteran animators like (Norio) Matsumoto and (Takahiro) Kishida, whom I completely trust. I wanted young animators to absorb something from them by watching their works. Furthermore, by giving that kind of enviroment, I thought it would be nice if audience could see creators' energy reflected on the film. That's why I tried the challenge.
Basically, the show's looks are a result of the animator freedom and not a lack of budget.
>>138988539
>>138988626
Ok at least I understand their reasoning, it's just that, I don't know, I wanted it to look better or something.
It was too free for my tastes. I still liked the show though.
>>138988909
It's not uncommon to see the works of the "web-generation" animators being criticised for being flashy without having some draftsmanship fundamentals, but generally these young animators bring a very cool style to the table. Anyway, the youngsters who worked on Birdy are experienced now and there's a whole new generation out there. The last show with a lot of loose animation from young web-gen animators were Yozakura Quartet and Yoru no Yatterman, but I don't think people find the animation there to be as controversial as Birdy's.
>>138989131
Yozakura? I believe you mean Tsuki no Naku right? If that's so then yeah I believe that part.
>but I don't think people find the animation there to be as controversial as Birdy's.
Yeah I thought Yozakura's was fine in it's own way. It didn't look "too free".
>>138989273
From Hoshi no Umi onwards. The director for the series was actually animation supervisor for Birdy, and Shingo Yamashita who did>>138977019 and >>138977220 was episode director. The main animators on Yozakura are a new generation of young animators with different influences, though they still exhibit the typical flashy animation styles associated with web-gen animators.
The earlier web-gen animators who worked on Birdy like Shingo Yamashita and Kenichi Kutsuna had the likes of Norio Matsumoto and Satoru Utsunomiya as inspiration and even as mentor for the the latter with Kutsuna under him.

>>138976957
>>138977019
I actually can't comprehend how people see this as bad. I mean sure you can argue that its QUALITY but I honestly think the style at work here compliments this scene so well. Birdy fucking LOSES HER MIND, her whole world is falling apart. The grittiness and rawness of the animation really brings that home. This isn't supposed to be cool or sleek, its supposed to be heartbreaking. You can feel her emotions in the animation, and I think that's really novel way of animating. This scene is a masterpiece.

Personally, as someone who is an amateur animator and draws frequently, I really appreciated the artistic liberties taken in Decode. >>139010424
What is the deal with this thing where an animation gets exactly repeated three times? I've seen it in some other 90s OVAs.
>>139010543
I disagree, my friend. It's as near-perfect as an OVA can get.
>>139010737
I can never decide between OVA and Decode Birdy. I think they're both perfect.
>>139007425
Eyebrows...
>Ryo-Chimo will never make another anime again
>>139012500
A-1 will never be as good as back when they made Decode and SNW either.
>>139012771
So much lost potential.
The original manga has some great scenes and designs.
>>139008718
I agree, but it doesn't stop me from thinking of how beautiful she is every time she's drawn.
>>138990349
Best girl forgets all about the MC and their relationship is made nonexistent. I wish that they still became a couple.
>>139016518
She was asking about him at the end of s2. They were probably going to get back together in s3.
