Since it didn't fall into the usual rut of taking itself seriously for the climax, and actually took the piss out of itself the entire way through. That said, holy fuck was Deen QUALITY in full force throughout most of the show. Seemed like every 5 seconds there would be another off-model face or giant forehead.

She was my least favorite character at first, but after the anime I read some of the LN's and after reading them, though she is simple-minded, I found her to be genuinely sincere and caring when it counts, especially to her worshipers.

It preys on reasonable expectations of everything with this general premise being complete shit by having fun characters and a tongue-in-cheek setting. Doesn't get bogged down in autistic hypothetical game mechanic explanations or long-winded exposition, doesn't try to take its plot too seriously unless it's for a laugh, just a fun framework starring fun people.

It poked fun at JRPG tropes without being mean spirited. The MC was stuck in a weird psuedo-harem situation not because he was dense but because the only girls who would associate with him were freaks and retards which let the MC actually have character. It didn't try to stick to a formula or even deconstruct a formula, it was just plain old silly, lighthearted fun.
I loved the more specific vidya references too, like the MonHun style quest acceptance slides.

it fell back on some old school humor, which only really is in style in plays and theater, where jokes build on themselves and set up even more extreme jokes, constantly one upping itself. it relies on a LOT of theatrical or "classic" shakespearian types of humor, then it bundles it with a bunch of self aware humor and general pop culture references on it's genre to make it not feel stale.
Combined with a director who has solid comedic timing and a VA cast that REALLY REALLY got into their rolls, and you have something that transcended it's mediocre (non) plot, worn setting, and derpy artstyle.
In the end it was just a genuinely enjoyable show.
