His character was pretty well written (if we pretend he's female mentally) for the first 10 volumes or so. His relation with Sakura makes zero sense however. He's specifically stated many times quite demanding how little of interest he had in her. They just aren't compatible intellect wise. What build up? If there had been any relevant build up in 699 chapters people wouldn't have been clueless about Naruto and Sasuke's future wives. Sure, we knew Naruto would have chosen either Hinata or Sakura, but that's it, prior to chapter 700 we had almost no development. That makes the whole shipping thing irrelevant for me, at least for the "main couples", and the fact the author decided to go for those didn't raise my interest at all. Random couples, even if just for the surprise factor, would have been more interesting to me. I gotta be honest with you, before finding /a/ I didn't even know people actually cared pairings in Naruto.
