I find that a lot of the time knowing what each kanji in words are actually fucks you up more than just remember the whole word as a single entity

Book-Off in Japan is an magical place.

What LNs are worth a read raw? Preferably not in the doc and not having adaptations.

So I guess I’ll start from the beginning; utter frustration and despair. I was attempting to read Full metal alchemist, typically rated as a pretty difficult read for learners and I learned the hard way why that is. I took on the challenge like I did with Yotsubato and tried to learn everything and then re-read the chapter after my vocab caught up. But nothing would stick, nothing made sense, and nothing helped. So I took my vocab list to my friend and asked him to look over it. It was pretty obvious to him why I was having trouble. The words were mostly written only, seldom used, or archaic words. Words I’m not going to be using well for a long time. That’s when I realized why it isn’t a good idea to try and read above your level. It’s not that it’s difficult; it’s that you’re never going to use it outside of reading that one subject or level of reading. It was difficult because those words didn’t fit in with my life or anything I would say or otherwise read. They truly had no meaning to me. That was my first lesson to getting better; I gave up on Full metal and returned to focus completely on finishing Yatsubato.

It's a good idea to read above your level, but preferably something with non-obsolete vocabulary.

The next lesson was a bit harder to swallow. I have a friend who is also learning Japanese, who is actually pretty fluent. I ran into him and asked for help.He ended up helping me the best way he could. He took me to a snack bar. What happened next actually really pissed me off though. There he was having a normal conversation with the bar staff without missing a beat. But the envy wasn’t what ticked me off. It’s that I understood every word he said, and every word she said but if you asked me what they were talking about I’d have no clue what was going on. (WTF???)

Imagine meeting someone with 2/3rds the Vocab, half the Kanji and half the grammar knowledge but there they are speaking casually while you mumble out incoherent sentences. I was really annoyed at myself, that night proved that i already had the knowledge i was only missing the ability. It was a good crash course though; we ended up with two girls and we just talked all night. It really forced me to talk because the girl would just stare waiting for my garbled broken response, then she would figure out what I meant and kindly try to move the conversation on simply enough for me to understand. Going home that night I realized why my own progress was so stunted. My friends that I talk to regularly, all speak English. Any time the conversations slowed they switched to English to keep the conversation going. It was like this with all my friends. The conversation was more important than learning the language. That and since their English was much better than my Japanese, we would always gravitate to English. It was a real eye opener but I was kind of skeptical. So I tested it.

For some words you'll have to manually get audio from Forvo or fix the sentence (for situations like having to enable sticky mode to select the entry you want, which messes up the sentence it gets imported with).

Whenever I see something written in a language I don't know I always avoid looking at it, especially if it's a doujin or whatever with Chinese subs. I feel like it'd mess with my brain and make me lose all of my Japanese gains if I'd look at it and try to understand it.

Just now I watched some Love Live video subbed in Portuguese and was trying hard to not look at the subs and just listen to them talking because I didn't want my brain to needlessly learn a language I don't give a shit about. Like they were counting and I refused to look at it.

Am I the only one?

I can see how it could be helpful, but the thing is translations (especially random amateur ones, the official ones can be bad too) aren't incredibly reliable all the time, so if the guy makes a mistake in translating and you do too, you'll read the mistranslated bit and then that'll reinforce your misunderstanding on how a piece of grammar works. Beyond using the Yotsuba reading pack for the first 2 volumes, I wouldn't really check with translations for actual content.
>>
>>138865911
>>138866035
Very illuminating.
>>
>>138865835
1) if you don't know the grammar or a word it's obvious and easy to look up
2) massive exposure will eventually iron out 99.9% of misunderstandings (so as a beginner its ok to misunderstand)
3) if you are misunderstanding, conversations and narration won't make logical sense in some way or another

What JLPT level/equivalent will core 2k/6k take me to? I'm only 25% into it, and I'm occasionally tackling N2 vocab, and want to take the test at the end of the year.

I can't decide whether I should go for 15/20/25 words a day. I feel like I learn well and quickly at 15, but I can finish the deck in under half a year if I jump back up to 25.
>>
>>138868874
Does it cover all N1 grammar or a couple of points? By the latter measure Tae Kim can be N1+ as well.
>>
>>138869002
Core is not in JLPT order, its kind of all over the place.
>>
>>138869057
There's a bit of an annoying order to it, I feel based off similar kanji/readings, though it is strange to learn "ramen" 1000+ words in. I don't mind too much, because it makes some days easier than others.

But yeah, I'm curious what "level" it will get me to. Even 25% of the way through, there's lots of words that I'd never even use living in Japan now (no one says 従来 for instance, and that came up fairly early) and some elicit shock from friends that hear me studying.

What are your reading tendencies? Do you ever read multiple things at once or do you adopt a "pump and dump" mentality?

I ask because I'm ~400 words mined into Hanahira and getting a bit tired of it. At first the novelty of actually being able to read native Japanese was exciting but now I am realizing it is a pretty damn run-of-the-mill SoL with yuri undertones and I'm not sure I want to read it all the way through.

Remember - the goal is to read COMPELLING content. "compelling" isn't something to ignore as linguist mumbo jumbo, it's important - read stuff that *COMPELLS* you to read it, stuff you're interested in. If you're not compelled to read something, drop it like an ugly baby.

Note: This applies to language learning, but not necessarily real life, pushing through things you don't feel compelled to do often is valuable. It's just that in terms of language learning, simple mass-exposure is arguably more important than quality of exposure and thus being compelled is very important (because to become fluent you need to expose yourself to a LOT of content and if it's not compelling content it'll be hell and take fucking forever due to procrastination, whereas if it's compelling content you'll have a good time gaining the requisite exposure).

It evens out at about new cards*10 because of SRS algorithm and then grows extremely slowly until you stop adding new cards.

>>138870997

Grows logarithmically. Theoretically if you stuck to the same amount of cards/day for as long as you learn Japanese it would increase forever, but that doesn't happen since eventually you ease off on new cards as you know more and more. But like >>138871140 it typically "evens out" at about 10 times your new cards/day.

I think there are JLPT decks on Ankiweb if that's really what you're looking for.

I'd say if you finish Core6k I'd say you would have somewhere between N3-N2 level vocab and kanji. Actually being able to read Japanese at N2 level, at speed, is a different thing from merely knowing all the vocab.

There are textbooks that teach to the JLPT, try getting a copy of Nihongo Sou Matome N3 (use google), specifically the Dokkai (reading comprehension) book, and working through that.

6 months maybe?
My problem was just that a lot of those kanji only appeared in 1 card so my mature retention was abysmal (I'd go months without seeing the kanji, and thus had no chance of getting the card right 1-2 months later). Furthermore, my young retention was poor due to having to learn a new kanji every other word, which made every single card harder. Right now I'm doing 40 new cards a day with 400 reviews, simply because I know all the kanji in the deck pretty well.

I get slightly triggered when people clearly don't read the guide. I mean, I'd gladly answer somebody asking specific material for specific needs but when somebody come in here saying "ay dawg, I wanna study moon real quick, what's the best way to do it", without even reading the guide, it pisses me off a bit.

You mouseover the entry you want and import that. Works for most cases. If it's a case where the word has the same kanji but different readings, then you can try importing the hiragana, but you'll probably still have to manually copy and paste the definition and/or sentence into the card. Even then, it's a quick job to fix up and the vast majority of words don't require any manual work.

400 words is not that far since my vocab was very lacking going in. All I had done was Core2k + another thousand. The main problem is I have no idea how long it actually is, if I knew I were close to finishing it I probably would, but I get the feeling I'm only about 10% in or so.

Do anyone else have an issue with mining very explicitly lewd words? Words like 陰核 would be useful to review once in a while, but knowing it might pop up when I least expect it would completely prevent me from ever doing my reps when people can see me. A lot of nukige vocabulary will be totally innocent out of context, but it would be pretty hard to explain why you need to know 陰核.

Mind controlling parasites are nice too, but they've been overplayed on mainstream sites to the point of becoming cliche.

It's not my own cup of tea, but the right youtube searches can lead you to Indian doctors who proudly post HD videos of their adventures treating enormous blackheads and other skin conditions in the Indian countryside.

Brain research animal experiments are also pretty fucked up, and the well knows ones have accessible write-ups available. There's the usual stuff like cutting out (or disabling) parts of the brain, and then it gets even worse with stuff like raising young animals while witholding one thing or the other.
