This show is the most evident example of Shaft being a terrible studio.
It was Monogatari in every aspect except for the characters. They copy pasted every resource they had.

The fucking dog. He ruins everything. He ruined the gritty atmosphere that was supposed to be in the anime and pretty much almost all of the really dark moments were retconned by the dog's presence. Manga is better, no doubt.

first episode was actually very interesting. i was hooked when i saw a lazy mc with a virtual girl who met him by chance and wants to drag him out into the sun. then the other characters appeared and had super powers.... and it was all shit.

I think it sold decently. At the time, the source material was more popular than god.
I remember a lot of people asking what the premise was and never getting a real answer. Then the show comes out and it's both pretty straightforward and terrible. No idea what the original songs (?)/novel (?) was about.

It really wasn't.
The episodes in the late-middle weren't bad at all on their own merit, but they were paced way too slowly for their episode constraints and by the time they got to the penultimate episode and realized they only had two episodes left to work with, everything collapsed in a shitshow of rushed bullshit.

These threads are probably mandated to all be shows made int he last five years but fuck it I'm going back further.
I can't believe I sat through eighteen episodes hoping it would improve.
An unlikable cast where everybody but Orphen was useless baggage, a boring story, very little action, a bland setting, and worst of all no adventure. I came in hoping for more classic 90s DnD fantasy and all I got was a complete bore.
At least the Black Tiger was okay.
