That's exactly the problem with the recent games, they try to do exactly this and fail miserably and now Berseria has gone full edge too to make things even worse.

The games do have their own comedy shorts, actually, there are way too many of them nowadays. I won't comment on turning the brain off because videogames are mostly for that, Tales isn't really a complex series anyway.
What gets to me is that they're making the franchise almost unrecognizable, I'm not saying that the older games didn't try to be deep but now they're really cranking it up way too much, it makes me miss the feeling of a lighthearted adventure of Eternia, Destiny or Phantasia, sure, there was drama but nowhere near as bad or pretentious as the last games.

If you want something more recent you can play Hearts R, that's kinda short too, at least much shorter than home console titles.
Then again, if you only care about the main storyline all Tales games are around 20 hours max, the bulk of the game is collecting stuff, doing sidequests and grinding levels and equipment to play at higher difficulty levels.

Story has always been garbage in Tales and videogames in general.

Gameplay has barely made any progress from Eternia besides longer juggling, that's one of the reasons why I'm not playing a lot of the late games, I know how they're going to play, none of the gimmicks they've shoved in manages to be interesting, it's still the same old juggling your punching bag of the day, and I like it for what it is, don't get me wrong, but after 20 or so games I'd rather play with characters I like rather than do the same exact thing I've did for years but with characters that I hate.

If you mean characterization Tales has one of the most vapid, cliched and boring set of archetypes in the genre, only a handful of games had characters that were somewhat decently written, and Berseria is already proving to not be one of those exceptions judging from the PVs.
So, to be perfectly clear, I like making longass combos with over the top yelling with cliched characters I like rather than garbage designed for edgy teens.
