Some of the characters just felt pointless to the over all narrative, and a lot of the more pointless ones really took up a lot of time. I mean I can get some of the girls existing even if they don't add to the big shonen plot, like Ayaka, but some of the other girls were so unmemorable and trying to focus on them make things feel so slow. The harem portions of this really made me learn to hate harems.

Negima's writing was never particularly good so I don't know about this. The worldbuilding was nice and some of the characters were fun to read about but I wouldn't put above most other shounen battle manga. I will say it hit its stride after a while but it became really shitty towards the end. Like the series was just spinning its wheels.
