I would pick beserk.
The art is amazing.
The background building is awesome, and the culmination of arcs is amazing.
The story reinvents itself a few times, there is like 3-4 main arcs that drastically change whats going on.
You will see a persons dreams fall apart.
You will see a monster being forged.
You will think you have seen the worst, then it throws more right in your face.

Attack on titan is also good though, i did enjoy it. Its shorter, but is being updated on a more regular basis.
It also pulls a story change, but It leaves stuff unfinished when it does, which didn't sit well with me.

If your looking for other great dark magas I would recommend Tokyo ghoul, and Claymore.
IF you end up reading and liking Beserk, I HIGHLY recommend reading claymore, they are very similar but still tell very different stories,
