Will there ever be another Stand Alone Complex?

I've rewatched the first GiTS movie and Innocence, and even tried to watch ARISE, but it just doesn't feel the same. I don't know if its because of the benefits of being a series, but I feel SAC was really successful at making the Inner universe Shirow wanted to depict feel really fleshed out. As of late I've been trying to find another show just like it. I watched PsychoPass and for a while it sorta filled that void for me (2nd season can go to hell though). I even started playing that First Assault game, although not bad by itself, it just makes me feel like I want to rewatch the entire series all over again...for the 2nd time.

I don't know if there's ever going to be another show of this caliber. I loved its pacing, and although while it did have many moments of political intrigue, it was all about how well Section 9 functioned as a team and how they seemed to overcome overwhelming odds (I still remember that laughing man episode when suddenly multiple people started attacking all at once claiming they were the Laughing Man).

RIP Origa

When Adult Swim/Toonami was in one of its more decent phases, they aired GITS SAC on a loop. I probably watched it 4-6 times just DVRing every episode. Sometimes I'd skip through the lesser ones, but I'd still realize new information about the better or arc important ones.
>>
>>137515280
I almost wish First Assault hadn't gotten the original cast back for every role. Hearing their new lines gives me feels.
>>
SAC 2 > SAC
>>
>>137515643
Some of the "filler" episodes oddly enough filled in some backstory for some of the characters, such as the Tachikoma's being controlled via satellite.

>>137515678
Just hearing Chief Aramaki barking at me to capture the terminal already makes me want to rewatch 1st season all over again.

Kuze was a better character than Aoi in every way
>>
>>137515706
If she had fucked the shota or Kuze, I would agree with you. But SAC has Batou teases (the underwear drawer/weapons cache), a better Tachikoma arc, and the Major lounging with her lesbian lovers+ the hospital scene, so it wins.
>>
>>137515736
>Some of the "filler" episodes oddly enough filled in some backstory for some of the characters,
So when Pazu fought Pazu which Pazu died?

>Some of the "filler" episodes oddly enough filled in some backstory for some of the characters, such as the Tachikoma's being controlled via satellite.

Yeah, and that's not a connection I necessarily make the first time. Maybe if I binged, but not week to week.

Too bad Kuze and the Major never got together...

I don't know whether to call Godah a great villain or not, but the Serano Genomics coverup felt pretty intense, and it wasn't like there was some sort of pin-point villain so it always kept people guessing.

The whole last arc of 2nd Gig was spectacular though. And blowing Godah's head.

SAC had a lot of ultimately useless scenes and more than half the series was filler. And I disagree about the tachikoma arc in SAC being better than in SAC 2. The tachikomas sacrificing themselves to destroy the nuke was perhaps the best scene across both GITS series
>>
>>137515678
I wish First Assault had been any good. Given the fantastic source material, they went and made... the most generic F2P arena shooter imaginable.

God damn it.

Both Season 1 and Season 2 are very close in terms of quality. It's not like fucking PsychoPass Season 1 and Season 2 where the difference is night and day. I prefer the series to Solid State Society.

I think you're reflexively rejecting the genre. Terminal is the best execution of a control points mode I've seen. The only really crippling factor is that the great character design screams for team building and communication, both of which are pretty limited right now.
>>
>>137516046
They had a lot more growth in the first season, and more attention was given to their effort to save Batou than they got for the satellite suicide run.

American Empire best America!

I'm still kinda miffed about Jungle Cruise

I mean fine, we're a bunch of psychopathic killers who flail people alive, but why'd you have to go and make the Japanese-American agents a bunch of monstrous looking zombies?

Although it was kind of abrupt Godah's death was so satisfying, I definitely thought the fucker was somehow going to worm his way out of it and then they just blow his brains out right there.
>>137516483
I thought SSS was mediocre, it has some great scenes (the sniper duel with Saito) but for the most part it just felt like an unnecessary addition to SAC when 2nd gig had a fine ending as is.

I felt like I forced myself to try and enjoy it because after SAC that's all there was, it has nothing on the 2 SAC seasons.

Also while we are on the subject is this guy the original laughing man? Or just another copy without an original? He killed NANO-A and serano at the end and here he is spilling the beans on interceptors to togusa, he is an inspector on the laughing man case.
>>
>>137516954
Then Batou dies.

no.
that's why they made the shit arise.

>>137517257
Another copy without an original. Didn't we see the uncloaked Laughing Man (as in the guy with the blue jacket, but he himself never called himself the Laughing Man) in series?
>>
>>137516954
if it's going to be SAC it has to be kamiyama kenji.
>>
>>137517291
>Didn't we see the uncloaked Laughing Man
Yes that was Aoi, but he even said himself that he was a copy without an original and what spurred him on was coming across a blackmail email to serano genomics while surfing the net one day.
>>
>>137516502
He gets a little bit when they're stealing the nuke about what his old job was, and he gets attention at varying parts, like when he gets his head fucked by the Individual 11 virus. Whereas Pazu gets an entire episode and then virtually nothing else.
>>
>>137516502
>>137517368
This is why ARiSE is worthwhile. Bouma gets more characterization and it has a non-ridiculous version of Paz.
>>
>>137517576
Should I watch it?

Weird looking Kusanagi scared me off. Worth picking up again on its own or only if I'm invested in the characters?
>>
>>137517607
It's okay.

Artstyle is the only thing wrong with it. It would have been nice if it explored WWIV's effect on society more. But there are only so many wishes we can have granted and "more GitS" was what we spent it on.
>>
>>137517607
If you can't separate various versions of the characters from the one you ship, then stay away.

If you genuinely enjoy the setting and appreciate the characters as frames around which stories are told, go for it.

As I said, it has the best Bouma and Paz. Saito has development spread out across the series, which may be an improvement (although that one episode with the poker game is one of the finest "let's just give this guy one episode" ever, so it's a high bar to clear).
>>
Does anyone else remember that scene in Arise where the Major shoots a rocket at that helicopter Saito is in and fucking blows him up, but then he's fine later? Was that ever explained? I mean it definitely looks like he dies.
>>137517607
It's got some really great scenes but for the most part it's mediocre with only a few bits that are bad. If you really love GITS it isn't a waste of time by any means and the attention some of the more ignored characters in SAC get is nice.
>>
>>137517772
Cyborg implants let him survive?

This was right before the Major recruited everyone in the Rangers, right?
>>
>>137517607
>>137517745
Otherwise, it hits all the notes of GITS.
>Major fighting past the point of dismemberment
>Major basejumping in urban canyon
>Major romantically involved with an antagonist
>Network epiphenomena
>Ghost hack
>Tachikomas
>Optic camo
>Muh Mateba

Since it's an origin story, there are opportunities to make meta-comments about the setting which are mostly tasteful.
>>
Okay, Why I.G didn't use their old staff in SAC to make ARISE? What's good about Ubukata anyway besides that MS?
>>
>>137517813
It might of been different in Arise but in SAC they mention how Saito barely has any cyborg components other than his eye and one of his arms.
I'm pretty sure it's in the chase scene before that, yeah. I should probably rewatch arise since I don't remember most of it.
>>
>>137517900
>Since it's an origin story, there are opportunities to make meta-comments about the setting which are mostly tasteful.
Like I say every time ARISE gets mentioned; would have been nice to explore WWIV and it's effects on society more.

>>137517934
He's a high-rolling alcoholic mercenary with PTSD from WWIV (whereas in SAC he was just a regular mercenary). Batou mentions in the ARISE movie that WWIV veterans get a lot of unnecessary cyberization (much like how a lot of USA Marines have huge cars).
>>
>>137517986
I get the impression that due to radiation scrubbers, Japan was spared most of WWIV. Some adventurism on the Peninsula, but otherwise uninvolved.
>>
>>137518060
According to SAC, Japan fought in Mexico and Vietnam.

In fact, the Major captured Saito in Mexico.
>>
>>137515280

>>
>>137518177
Only engaging as a party to a UN operation underscores the geopolitical isolation of Japan from most of the externalities of WWIV.

ARiSE points to covert involvement in support of Japanese corporate interests, but even that seems to take place in the chaos of the immediate aftermath and is not indicative of a major role in the conflict.
>>
>>137518139
>Same universe

I think SAC overall had the best outfits.

Maybe it's because of the trenchcoat look.
