The characters aren't tropes at all, in fact it goes out of it's way to break tropes (princes, princesses and witches being the most obvious ones). It's just that the series has a very dramatic/theatrical feel and a pseudo fairytale setting, whereas Eva characters are pretty grounded and realistic in comparison. That doesn't make Utena characters less complex, it's just a difference in the way their complexities are explored.

If we're counting the manga, easily BerserkHonestly I think the complexity of eva is overrated. It's kinda like "babby's first philosophical journey". I mean sure that's not a bad thing in the slightest. But just because it was complicated when you were a kid and now have a big nostalgia boner over it, doesn't mean that it's not easily outclassed in the "deep" department. Just my opinion though.

Well that's the funny part. Sometimes a work of art (film,tv,book or otherwise) will have meanings and symbols that were never planned but seem to make sense to an audience. It seems a lot of stuff in Eva are like that. human brain likes finding patterns and Eva is a show that plays on that. there are lots of stuff in Eva that "feel" like they make sense. The only reason why I don't think it's pretentious is because you can tell the creator (anno) is earnestly trying to express himself through the show which is the anti-thesis of "pretentious".

Most of the people who praise it don't read books or watch movies and there isnt that much in the realm of anime that deals with mature themes. Eva might have originally started out that way, but it obviously underwent changes during the production run. That is why it was pulled from an ostensibly children's times slot to an evening adult time slot. It took a while before jap network execs actually watched one of the eps and said "fug dat".
But that's also part of the magic. It's something thats trying to be so much more than its genre or demographic. Kind of like Watchmen for comic books.
