I'm just surprised it was the Hikaru no Go anime that brought you these feelings. Is it really that good? I love the manga (tugs the heartstrings of my old chess club and tournament days), but I thought the anime adaption was just so-so. Same with Shion no Ou (like Hikaru but with shogi and a mystery plot), the manga is great but the adaption is lackluster (besides a kickin' OP).
Also you can stop reading Hikaru after the individual character stories. Nothing further was developed very far before the series was cancelled.
