Tell me a story pap/a/

Tell me a story of the time before time. Before Hi10P, DAIZ, Nyaa, torrents and the .mkv format.

What was it like in the days of Anime Web Turnpike or Kazaa or trading shitty piss-yellow subbed VHSs with that guy down the street?

That's called "Optic Yellow" and it's Far far better than white subs and now shadow or border that disappears. Yellow subs with borders and shadows are professional looking and much easier to read and pick out from everything else on screen.

tl/dr: fuck you.

In the '90s a college friend got Gunbuster on VHS tapes in a box of junk from a swap thing. At that point I didn't really know anything about Japanese animation. We just sat down with no expectations and made fun of it.
Good times. Now leave.

Type the name of any popular anime and there was a good chance you'd get three minutes of Bible Black or a minute long clip of a chick being fucked by a dog instead.

My mother was a teacher, so I'd grab the sneak the keys out and use the music room equipment to make copies of shitty anime subs on VHS for my friends, mostly things we'd recorded off of late night television or things we'd rented from Blockbuster.

After the advent of the internet, I remember spending a shit ton of time trying to figure out how to browse Japanese fansites because Japs can't into fucking Unicode and browsers couldn't handle the text without custom settings. Finding any kind of art at all was a miracle. I saved all kinds of awful shit back then, not sure why I still have it all but I do.

Anipike was actually a really helpful tool at the time, Google wasn't as good as it is now and Wikipedia wasn't much of anything so finding the Japanese name of a series was a pain in the ass. Go Gaia was also a very helpful tool but then it changed to Gaia Online and dropped the linklist based design to be a dress up forum flooded with 8 year olds.

Manga download were mostly done via IRC and you just had to hope whoever was hosting the file you wanted was on.

Also holy shit I just realised rec.arts.anime.misc is still alive and kicking somehow. How the fuck did usenet spawn outlast message boards and big name sites? I guess that gives me hope for /a/'s future.

I was a dumbshit and tried to save theme songs to 3.5" floppy drives. Took hours to download over dial-up and of course they didn't fit on the disk.

All those "shrine" sites before Pixiv, making collecting fan art a work of passion (the original purpose of /c/ and /cm/ was to collect these, I think, and they were very useful before Pixiv). MP3 rotation sites for "sampling" songs. Anipike being so goddamn useful. WinAmp.

And I will never, ever, for as long as I live, forget the dial-up tone. Or being yelled at for tying up the phone line for hours.

Mosty of anons here are so nostalgiafags that can't remember well how a pain in the ass was to get decent anime. If you didn't had many hours to spend on internet (of course, without relatives yelling at you to get off) to download 240p chapters with poorly translated subs, you had to stalk your anime provider like if you were buting drugs, and you had to lose any hope to get a well recorded tape, or at least to not spend ten minutes dealing with the tracking.

Aye. It's funny to hear when someone complains about the picture quality today.
Not that it's unreasonable, given the availability, but the lack of appreciation for a) the sheer content and b) it's overrall abundance can get a bit aggravating for someone who once had to fish for scraps.

Yeah but once you've watched enough stuff you'll start to recognize Japanese VAs across a lot of stuff too although their talent pool is wider given anime is produced there and they can have more potential VAs for specific role types.

As common as recognizing Japanese voices across many anime. Very.

It was a time of high adventure, a time when only the Chosen were allowed access to the treasures of the forbidden East. A time when running bootlegs was giving a huge Fuck You to the domestic shit they called 'children's television', led by the Antichrist Disney and its blasphemous minions Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera. A man knew the value of anime then, because he never had it handed over on a silver platter or found it at specialty shops in the fucking mall.

No, I don't miss spending weeks to download only one season just to discover the last chapter had an english/chinese/korean dub and there's no any other option but forcing yourself to watch it anyway. First thing I ever downloaded was a full Ranma 1/2 movie. It was 800 MB. Took me 9 hours, and I still had one of the faster connections among my friends, back in 2000.

Back then we used to wait on IRC for new RAW's from Japan. I still remember waiting 4 hours in queue to download the first episode of Pokemon where Charizard fought Blaziken, one of the first things we've seen of gen 3.

Besides that - tons of shit from Kaaza, little to no manga to be found, and if it was - only on MSN galleries Microsoft closed ages ago.

As much as people shit on Naruto - it's thanks to this series' popularity we now have all this manga every week. It all started from Naruto, and later Bleach.

Came in after 'anime is impossible to find' phase, and before 'anime was widely and cheaply/freely available' phase. Spent most of my money I got working in high school on dvds. There's an entire other layer behind the first, with single dvds of 4 episodes each that cost $40. Excel Saga, Higurashi, Fate/DEEN, Death Note... Most of them I haven't even bothered to torrent or make a back up copy of.

Who "watched anime on Youtube in 3 part episodes when they were a stupid teenager" here?
>>
In my day we walked 10 miles through 3 feet of snow just to get to the greasy balding man's house to watch half an episode for a series we couldn't even pronounce the name of
>>
>>137215843
How do you even hardsub on VHS?
>>
>>137248411
Youtube wasn't even a thing when most of /a/ was a teenager.
>>
>>137248249

If you've never watched yellow subbed VHS rips in 240p .asf you don't know SHIT about anime

But really, it makes you appreciate how good things are now, other than the mass extinction of sub groups going on.

>>137248411
Yep
Love Hina, Tenchi Universe etc..

>>
>>137247268

The best was gg's Code Geass mkv-only release with subs that intentionally broke VLC. All the whining from that was hilarious.

It didn't look THIS bad you piece of shit.
The worst quality shit I watched was 360p Doom Megalocalpse, and it was decent enough.

End of Evangelion on VHS too I suppose. For some reason the bad quality of the VHS makes the movie that much creepier.

Vinyl still maintains a semblance of audio resolution. Consumer analog tape is hot garbage compared to digital media -- and especially compared to the film masters they are based on.

That is an awesome colection but it bugs me that you have DVDs and BDs mixed for Madoka.

That was pretty much the time I figured out bd quality was actually different enough from dvd to actually be worthwhile. Every once in a while I'll notice it again, then not actually buy the bd until I've forgotten. This has been going on for years; the bds probably aren't even available anymore.

The yellow subs were done for legibility after being mastered on a consumer-grade Betamax, then copied to dozens of VHS tapes.
Yellow with a nearly black border looked less shit after all that than white with a black border.

Sorry man, did not get into anime until sometime like 2006. But I do remember watching Naruto on youtube on a guys channel called Lugia something (Cant remember the full name but im sure it was some digits like 2182 or something, he also had a second channel which i cant remember the name of). I also remember staying up late one night to watch the first few episodes of Bleach on some random website I found. All of course in glorious 240p
