My mother was a teacher, so I'd grab the sneak the keys out and use the music room equipment to make copies of shitty anime subs on VHS for my friends, mostly things we'd recorded off of late night television or things we'd rented from Blockbuster.
After the advent of the internet, I remember spending a shit ton of time trying to figure out how to browse Japanese fansites because Japs can't into fucking Unicode and browsers couldn't handle the text without custom settings. Finding any kind of art at all was a miracle. I saved all kinds of awful shit back then, not sure why I still have it all but I do.
Anipike was actually a really helpful tool at the time, Google wasn't as good as it is now and Wikipedia wasn't much of anything so finding the Japanese name of a series was a pain in the ass. Go Gaia was also a very helpful tool but then it changed to Gaia Online and dropped the linklist based design to be a dress up forum flooded with 8 year olds.
Manga download were mostly done via IRC and you just had to hope whoever was hosting the file you wanted was on.

I remember so many anime sites way back, Dragid, Anime-Forums, Galbadia Hotel, Idlechan, Anipike, it's weird thinknig about things that I visited everyday are gone but seeing the shells that remain of the ones that are still around is worse.
Also holy shit I just realised rec.arts.anime.misc is still alive and kicking somehow. How the fuck did usenet spawn outlast message boards and big name sites? I guess that gives me hope for /a/'s future.
I was a dumbshit and tried to save theme songs to 3.5" floppy drives. Took hours to download over dial-up and of course they didn't fit on the disk.
All those "shrine" sites before Pixiv, making collecting fan art a work of passion (the original purpose of /c/ and /cm/ was to collect these, I think, and they were very useful before Pixiv). MP3 rotation sites for "sampling" songs. Anipike being so goddamn useful. WinAmp.
And I will never, ever, for as long as I live, forget the dial-up tone. Or being yelled at for tying up the phone line for hours.

Mosty of anons here are so nostalgiafags that can't remember well how a pain in the ass was to get decent anime. If you didn't had many hours to spend on internet (of course, without relatives yelling at you to get off) to download 240p chapters with poorly translated subs, you had to stalk your anime provider like if you were buting drugs, and you had to lose any hope to get a well recorded tape, or at least to not spend ten minutes dealing with the tracking.

Didn't have Internet at home, had to go to an early streaming site (can't remember the name) at school, let the video buffer amd then download it from the temp Internet files (no audio at school). That's how I managed to watch most of dubbed Inuyasha. Learned how to program an old VCR just so I could record pokemon and DBZ on TV.
Luckily manga was easier to get, I used to download it all at stoptazmo.
Some vhs tapes still had some Japanese commercials, but only some episodes.

First thing I ever downloaded was a full Ranma 1/2 movie. It was 800 MB. Took me 9 hours, and I still had one of the faster connections among my friends, back in 2000.
Back then we used to wait on IRC for new RAW's from Japan. I still remember waiting 4 hours in queue to download the first episode of Pokemon where Charizard fought Blaziken, one of the first things we've seen of gen 3.
Besides that - tons of shit from Kaaza, little to no manga to be found, and if it was - only on MSN galleries Microsoft closed ages ago.
As much as people shit on Naruto - it's thanks to this series' popularity we now have all this manga every week. It all started from Naruto, and later Bleach.

I remember being 8 and astonished that one of my older friends got his hands on a subbed VHS of DBZ Fusion Reborn. The blood and cursing caught me off guard, and I still have no clue where he got it (we lived in the hood, to me anime was non existent)
Later on I watched the last 8 episodes of GT on VHS, despite the fact that I didn't even know what GT was. Again, no idea where the tapes came from - there was a black market for all kinds of bootlegs in NYC, but its long since vanished/stopped peddling weeb shit. I can only imagine how impossible it was to get your hands on anything in the 80's

Came in after 'anime is impossible to find' phase, and before 'anime was widely and cheaply/freely available' phase. Spent most of my money I got working in high school on dvds. There's an entire other layer behind the first, with single dvds of 4 episodes each that cost $40. Excel Saga, Higurashi, Fate/DEEN, Death Note... Most of them I haven't even bothered to torrent or make a back up copy of.
I remember going into HMV and specifically ordering the Mahoromatic box set. Torrenting and amazon really have made the world a better place.
