I've been doing a slow K-On rewatch for the past few months
I think I love all girls more each time I see it. At first I didn't like Ritsu but she's grown on me.
Mugi is the greatest anime character of all time though. I can forgive everything KyoAni's ever done because of her cute expressions.

At first I thought Mio was the best girl and should be the MC, then Azusa showed an I hated her but end up liking her after she mellowed. At some point during S2 I started to appreciate Yui's stupidity, Mugi started to shine and Ritsu became more fun.
After watching K-on for the second time I conclude that all the girls are best but if I have to pic my one I would chose Ritsu. She seems to be very fun and her little brother likes her.

K-on! was a very fun show. It had likable characters, and the concept of the whole rock and roll band was really fun.

I think she hangs out with the girls because they remind her her past and her own band. After all it was the keios the ones that discovered her "dark" past.
Sawa-chan grows a little thanks to the girls. She drops her "I am a innocent/kind teacher" act and she starts showing actual love for her students who end up liking her crazy bit kind of cool teacher. The extra episode showing Sawa-chan watching the girls pictures and saying that is going to be quiet without they around was pretty nice.

Just because you like her doest mean that she is not part of the moe fest. I mean even thought she is an adult and a former club member she encourages the girls laziness and makes them put silly/reveling outfits and eat cake instead of make them study or practice. If the show was realistic she would get fired and then sued for sexual harassment. Thankfully that never happens because K-on is a comedy. And if we talk about flaws Ritsu and Yui are lazy, Mio is way too shy, Mugi is spoiled/sheltered, Azusa is too stiff. But all of them worked and improved a little at the end of the show. Yui and Ritsu improved their grades enough to get accepted in college, Mugi got a part time job, Azusa became less strict without losing her mature personality and Mio well she is still very shy but she doest panic on stage anymore.
People forget that this is a comedy based on a 4koma. In fact he show improved the characters a lot like Sawa-chan for example she remained a comedic relief character in the manga.
