The flashback was belong to Bert you know. No one else knows it except the readers and Bert. Isayama used it very well to show Bert's inner thoughts and emotions. He seems silent and passive most of the time but even he is like that he keeps living/analysing things inside. Yet his friendship with other soldiers (like Jean, Connie, Eren and Armin) were only mentioned and only once or twice Isayama added flashbacks to show it but we know it's true.
