I can't think of another fight scene that conveys mass and scale as well as that one.
Mostly the animators just make the robots slow, or add dust clouds/sound effects, but they all move like man in suits or ballet dancers. They don't consider the fact that when a 40 meter tall mech swings a full length punch, that fist is moving at over 200 km/hour. Eva is unique because the evas are not animated as humans then scaled up.
Pay attention to the details in that fight, when the Eva recoil from the lance impacts, their foot slides back and takes out a small hill. When Asuka rolls to avoid, the inertia keeps her rolling for a while. When she swings that lance in an overhead, that thing leaves shockwaves behind not only because of the displacement, but also because the tip of the lance is close to the speed of sound and leaving shock cones.
