What the fuck, those anime writers should spend more time outside the anime/fiction world and taste a little of reality! I bet he doesn't even know about the F-35.

Japan still uses F-4EJs. In fact, several counties still use their own Phantom variants.

Turkey's F-4E2020 uses modern avionics.

In case you are retarded and didn't notice SDF is using equipment from the 80's.

Because it's cheap and there is no need for modern weapons when fighting fantasy Romans.

The f35 and the f4 have the same payload capacity.
You dont need things like air superiority when you are fighting romans who dont have aircraft.

Also those are both the top speeds for both aircraft mate. The f35 has yet to go faster than a F4 as of now.

>Who would win in a dogfight?

The F35 should easily take out the F4 without needing to enter a dogfight.

The F4 couldn't even find the F35, and just by actively looking for it the F35 would detect the F4 and lock onto it's radar. Even if the F4 had support aircraft that helped it locate the F35 it would be at an enormous disadvantage.

The entire point of a jet from this generation is that it will not need to dogfight in the first place. It will have an overwhelming advantage when it comes to detection range and situational awareness. The aircraft that spots the other first and shoots first is the victor 9 out of 10 times.

As far as unit costs for the end purchaser goes the F-35 is actually expected to be pretty damn cheap for a 5th gen multirole.

in the 2nd episode they explain that they are only sending their shit-gear beyond the gate(hence the wood-stocked old rifles.)

Also, as mentioned before, Japan still has F-4's... I think they're the only modern military still using them, but they are... and since they are, you can bet they're still using modern weapons and avionics. Wealthy nations cant afford to put unsafe/shit gear out, because its actually the cost of the pilots and soldiers that costs SIGNIFICANTLY more than the equipment.(in training, and family payouts should they die)

Cheap mass-produceable planes are much better than expensive ones against the BETA.

All that matters is that they can drop ordinance with decent aim and have okay parameters. Nothing else is needed, because no amount of evasion will save them from the laser class.

The JSDF is an extremely well equipped force. The way their constitution works is that they're limited to spending roughly 1% of GDP on their not-military. Fortunately for Japan, even today their GDP is pretty damn huge. Their main issue is never having engaged in a modern war. The intro of the movie Patlabor 2 is very interesting in that regard. Oshii based the sequence on actual comments by Japanese officers and soldiers deployed to a peacekeeping operation around 1990. He felt that the politics of the JSDF were so intrusive on every element that it would hinder their ability to wage war, which is seen in the commanding officer refusing to give orders to engage first as they would be violating ROE but save the lives of his men.
>>
>>136187528
The F-4 doesn't have 360 degree radar coverage. It can't see shit behind it. You could have the most unstealthy aircraft to ever fly, and unless it's got someone covering its ass, you could still sneak up on an F-4.
>>
>>136188336
Not him but their size and operation capacity rivals those neighboring countries with "real military".

Hell their air force and navy is the number one in Asia (including China).

At this stage, we all know that Japan pretty much has a full-fledged, combat ready army/navy/airforce available. At this stage the whole "self-defence" thing really doesn't matter you know,

After his time with the Morgan, probably.

F4 is one my top 3 favorite aircraft from the series. I completed ace combat X on the highest difficulty with it, what a wild ride.
>>
>>136186801
F4 has a turning circle the size of Nevada, whereas the F35 is chiefly handicapped by its poor speed and incredible fragility (pilots restricted from climbing / diving at more than 6000 ft / minute for fear of rapid changes in air pressure bursting the fuel tanks lmao). Neither one has a gun. F-35 has a limited degree of resistance to x-band radar in its front arc only, as long as it doesn't turn its radar on. F4 has a chance to use speed to evade a heat seeker, while the F35's thermal stealth characteristics are so bad that its best hope of survival is to hold real still and hope the missile mistakes it for the sun. Ultimately I think it would come down to the two planes flying huge awkward futile arcs around each other for the 30 minutes or so it takes for the F35 to run out of fuel or melt its own empennage off trying to use its afterburner. More likely scenario would be the F4 just wins by default because no commander is willing to throw his career away by risking something that costs literally more than the Louisiana purchase per unit in actual combat.
>>
>>136188849
>Neither one has a gun.
Wrong.
>>
>>136188646
>especially if you are trying to target enemy aircraft.
Then you don't, you prove the futility of aircraft by destroying their airbases. Focus on intercepting against their non-stealth missiles and prevent the enemy from re-arming their aircraft.
>>
>>136186801
The F-35 apparently compares favorably to a Super Hornet in maneuverability, is VLO, has a sensor suite to that would make AWACS blush and can mount the AIM-9X. It's a non-starter, even with a modernized Phantom.
>>
>>136188889
The chair force f-35 has a gun, but the navy and marine ones don't.
>>
>>136188993
Anon, the gun pod for the F-35B/C was tested before the internally mounted one on the A.
>>
>>136188993
Yes, I know. But you shouldn't generalize like that. Those other two variants can be equipped with gunpods as well.

Also, the F-4E has an internal gun, and like the F-35, the other variants can be equipped with gunpods.
>>
>>136188954
Super Hornets are kind of shitty in terms of maneuverability. But then they weren't designed to dogfight, they were designed to swing their noses around to have the widest arc for their missiles possible.
>>
>>136188849
Next time you watch a Mig vs Phantom special on the history channel make sure you make it to the part where they started putting internal canons in the F-4.
>>
>>136189026
Gunpods don't count.
>>
>>136189091
From what I've heard, the Hornet family is the only thing that makes Viper pilots nervous when wargame time rolls around. Purely anecdotal, of course.
>>
>>136189114
>Mounted weapons don't count
So I guess that no aircraft has ever carried a missile by your standards.
>>
>>136189121
Modern F-16s aren't that hot in terms of maneuverability either because of all the electronics they crammed into them. I remember reading about some Polish MiG-29 pilots who were consistently beating the block 52 F-16s in wargames. The US sent some older F-16s over, and they completely wiped the floor with the MiG-29s because they were much more nimble. But then dogfighting isn't everything these days.
>>
>>136188336
Your bait is boring.
>>
>>136189148
Missiles and guns are two different things, anon. Gunpods were shown to be a bad idea back on the F-4s.
>>
>>136189245
Neat. It can't help that pretty much every loadout I've seen for a modern Viper I've seen involves droptanks, because apparently the drop and a half of fuel it carries internally doesn't get them very far. Hasn't Saudi Arabia or some place in the Middle East had all theirs fitted with CFTs?
>>136189307
I don't see why a failure in the 60's means that it can't be done well some 50 years later.

The F-35A and F-4E are the only variants of the planes that matter, and they both have internal guns.

Realistically no.
JSDF has:
1) Good tactical info system including a set of satellites but limited to the region
2) Acceptable ASM and a good ASM in dev
3) Anti sub capability and crazy SOSUS in the region

JSDF does not have:
1) Carrier and on carrier AEW and thus, sufficient stand-alone anti-air capacity as fleet
2) Nuclear subs, limited operational range.
3) Capability to strike enemy bases.

It's not too shabby but JP is pitted against, China, Russia and North Korea. As whole, the composition is too home land defense centric to win any war.

And the list goes on

>>136194609
Gotta keep the best stuff for the motherland, nigga
>>
Why does the marines always got second hand stuff?
>>
>>136196118
Because they're an overgrown branch of the USN that really shouldn't be as big as it is. The Navy wants to spend its budget on navy things, so the little second army that they have gets table scraps. Using old but still functional Army gear is a very useful way to save money. They also have different operational requirements for some things, which is why they stuck to an upgraded Huey.
>>
>>136196118
It's not second hand (well, maybe the the abrams, but then again it was rebuilt so damn thing is practically a new tank), but consider this; US Army gets roughly 35 percent of the annual DoD budget. >>136196393
If it throws bullets I'd imagine it's good enough for most USAF ground duties.
>>
>>136196118
Like the other nigga said, the corps aren't using second hand equipment from the army (maybe some of them, like Abrams, but they didn't get them directly from the army). They're using newly produced, upgraded version of legacy weapon platform.

The reason? Logistics.

The corps could totally replace their Hueys with Blackhawks and their Cobras (mind you this is the 2-engine variant, not like the army's single-engined cobras. Shit was given to 3rd world countries like Morocco, Thailand and Jordan) with Apache. But replacing the whole infrastructure, retraining the whole maintenance crew as well as the learning curve associated with it are deemed as too expensive for a (sub)branch of service with a meager budget. Not to mention that the new platform has to be modified for suit the corps requirement (like heightened resistance to salinity, for example)

tl;dr it's not worth it.
