Nice to be able to shut up those doomsayers claiming the first episode's quality was a result of it being a stitch of the OVA, show's just as beautiful in this episode, and hell I liked both performances better than the ones in the first. The bad performance was heart-wrenching, seeing his clenched and shaking fists, the sweat on his face, the piano drowning out his performance, like holy shit. And then the latter made me actually lol at the last bit, that was fucking funny.
Soundtrack is still extremely good, although when the fuck do we get the OP visuals?
Also what'd you guys think of the ED? I like the song and it's very stylish, I usually prefer more bombastically animated stuff but this is far more in line with the show's tone, makes for a more fitting end.
I'm loving the hell out of this. Pretty much every rakugo sequence is making me smile ear to ear, except for Kiku's disaster of a first performance, but you really can't blame him. Lord knows I've felt the same as him on-stage, I'm surprised he didn't lash out more when backstage, Ain't nothing worse then knowing your failing and the audience letting you know you are too. Still, episode was great. I'm already disappointed we're only getting one cour of this, I'd love to have six months of rakugo.

I actually did chuckle a bit at the baby story, which made it all the harder. It's definitely a funny story on its own. Crazy respect to the people who made that scene work, taking a legitimately funny story and telling it so poorly as to evoke sympathy, embarrassment, the works from the audience is a feat and a half. The little forced laughs were brutal, and seeing his teacher turn his back on him was just hard.

If you follow his eyes when he walks on, they draw attention to the first instant where he looks at the crowd, you can see the fear shoot through him. It's chilling.
It's really great how they manage to portray both good and bad rakugo performances really convincingly through great voice acting, animation and direction.
I absolutely love the art direction and the color palette really improves a lot the immersion. Glad this episode everything remained consistent in terms from what was shown in the last episode. Also the musical direction was exceptional.

It's narrative comedy anon. If you can feel a narration that has separate characters well done and an atmosphere dictated by the energy of the narrator, then it's good.
That being said, I didn't particularly think it was good. It was definitely lively -- due in part to his nature -- but it felt really stiff and lacked real feelings of a story or the ability to differentiate character; it sounded kind of rehearsed, for lack of a better word.
Not to say it was bad though, considering he was just a little kid mimicking a rakugo style.

You can if you pick up on the context clues or listen to what the characters who know what they're talking about are saying.
No one here is a rakugo expert, and the people giving you feedback are only telling you about the clues they picked up or quoting what the characters already said.

Look for things like the tone of voice. A big give away for that first rakugo was how the character voices were essentially the same. The cuts didn't change perspective as much as usual either, which made it harder to tell when he had changed character.
This all gave away that he wasn't great.

The big shows are the camera angles and the music.
You can find other subtle hints but those two are the easiest so far to really tell what's what. For example, when the master in the first episode did his rakugo about the guy in the snow you could tell it was kind of serious and professional just from the dark stage and the lack of camera movement.
Really the rakugo segments are the best part so far, they're so well made.

The piano drowning out Yakumo was so well done. It mimicked rakugo itself, with a slow start building up the pace of the wordplay with a sudden end. At the same time it matched Yakumo's increasingly growing desperation too.

Is it true the author did some rakugo herself?
Watching this is amazing, but I wonder if the manga is any good considering rakugo probably won't translate well into a written format. The anime is fucking stellar though.
