Murata generally draws everything too clean and precise for shit to really look monstrous. The mutable forms of ONE's art is part of what makes the monsters work. This is a problem with the adaptation of ONE's art in many regards but in monsters it especially robs them of their dramatic appearance. The only ones that Murata ever does better are monsters that are supposed to have a very clear form, like the crab monster or the centipedes.

One Piece would be great either way, but sitting through this turd first really emphasizes how well written it is. Oda actually has something resembling a grasp on good story progression and drama. Mashima's idea of drama is showing a flashback that's irrelevant to the current scene but has children crying, and then having characters yell about friendship in an emotional fashion. Incidentally, that's also his idea of character development.
