Even on the first watch it's not too tough. The only part I missed out on that I got later was how Gendo had Adam on his palm. Once you get that, it's pretty simple: Rei decides to tell Gendo to fuck off, the anti-AT field breaks up everyone's idea of "self", everyone merges into a goo of everyone, and then Shinji decides he'd rather be separate and anyone else who wants to can as well, and so Asuka does too. That's a pretty rough but accurate imo rundown of all of the mildly confusing bits.

Yea, I mean the literal story is not hard to understand first watch, you just sometimes are sitting there like "holy fuck is this really happening" or at least I was. But I'm saying that even the general meaning and basic interpretations of what things mean isn't that hard by your second watch.
