the problem with smart characters in literature and specially in anime is that the authors must do a proper job of convincing us that their protagonists (or supporting chars) are bright beyond reasonable doubt.
And they usually fail miserably. It's one thing to write a script saying that random guy (a) has a 900 IQ, nonetheless convincing the readers of the fact is the hard part.
