I used to not be a fan since he's been making the same movie every two years since Hoshi no Koe and I thought 5cm/s was way overrated, but I've recently started to change my opinion. Garden of Words was nice, and there's no denying that everything he makes looks incredible. I just wish he'd branch out a little more in terms of his storylines. He could even use the same themes without just repeating himself ad nauseam. He's got a talent for directing, but his writing is very limited. Still, I am looking forward to his next work, it looks promising. But anyone who only started following him because of 5cm and hasn't seen his earlier work isn't entitled to an opinion on the matter.

To all the retards saying his movies pander to normalfags, you can't be any more wrong. Shinkai's shit is aimed only at people that have no idea how real life romance works. To enjoy any of his movies you have to be emotionally retarded, having no idea what love is and being incapable of loving anyone. Only then you can watch it and be able to suspend your disbelief towards the characters and enjoy the atmosphere, instead of spouting the habitual "he shoulda moved on" or "thas just retarded" or "a school teacher can't be this dumb".
Now a normalfag is expected to have experience in these matters, he's no stranger to love. But a loveless, friendless emotionally frigid otaku can look at the events presented and accept them as something alien to him, but nontheless beautiful and not without pathos. Being able to detach from what would normatively be considered shit or immature writing, the emotional retard is then able to understand and enjoy the esthetic, and the esthetic is certainly present, you can't deny that.
It's weird that folks on /a/ these dayss don't like Shinkai more, seeing as you'd think they are his TA, but I guess this has to do with how deeply the normalfags have infiltrated the boards and how readily everyone else accepts their normative values and judgements.

It wasn't about romance, it was about two people who don't feel like they belong on their worlds finding companionship in each other and helping each other find their own way. It's a kid who is too mature for his age and can't relate to his peers hanging out with a depressed woman who only eats chocolate and doesn't fit into the adult world. They were just what each other needed at the time, and kept each other company when it rained, but as the rainy season came to an end so too must their relationship. It was a metaphor for how they gave each other the strength they needed to get through the rainy dark time in their lives and as everything became sunny again they parted ways. It wasn't meant as a romance, because of course a high school kid and an adult being in a relationship would be silly, that was never the point.
