Opinion on Oreimo? I personally enjoyed it, decent characters, art was good, and some humorous parts were actually funny.
Hated how the first episode just threw everything down on the table so suddenly. 10 minutes in she's blabbing about her secret loli stash. The first season might've actually been fun if there was a build up to that stuff.
Entire first season after the first episode, Kirino is just a bitch who doesn't let up at all, while her brother suddenly wants to be her slave for no good reason.
Second season was OK, except the cat bitch suddenly stealing the spotlight followed by Kirino suddenly being completely out of character compared to before.
Worst part is they don't even fug.

tl;dr: Anime butchered everything, they don't really break up in any meaningful way, after story hints they're banging some months after it ends.
It was the pinnacle of its genre, if we only talk about the production values, but the story got butchered to the point it confused most of the viewers, (that's why is highly recommendable that you go read the LN after it) the main reason being that all the characters were portrayed as stereotypes as perceived by Kyouske at the beginning of the series.
Kyousuke thought Kirino was always angry for no reason, so the anime made that her whole character.
Kyousuke thought Kuroneko was cute and quite, so the anime made that her whole character.
Kyousuke thought Manami was kind and gentle, so the anime made that her whole character.
It didn't bother considering that Kyousuke's first impression was unreliable and that characters change over time.

Kirino was too bitchy, which would have been fine if she gradually became nicer. Then suddenly in the final episodes she seemingly gets hit with 20 episodes of character development instantaneously and is noticeably sweeter, which just felt too sudden, or like they realised they forgot to include a change in her attitude earlier and had to rush it.
I couldn't stand Kuroneko. Felt like pure pandering to stereotypical insecure anime fans. Her chuuni shit annoyed the crap out of me and the episodes where she practically hijacked the show bored me to tears.
Ayase went from being decent to being the worst character on the show, then back to being decent. Too little too late though.
Kanako was irrelevant, and having her become romantically interested in Kyousuke cheapened the show and made it look even more like a bad harem.

Saori is probably best, but I think that might be because they didn't bother giving her any flaws.

You nailed it.
Going in, the anime staff clearly had no idea of character direction so they built every character as static, simple characters and adapted everything that complimented their stereotype. This means all of Kirino's tsun was adapted and additional tsun was added, and most of the dere was snipped.
It came back and bit them in the ass by the end because the characters were never static, and all the shit they left out was important moments of progression. It's why Kyousuke and Kirino seem almost out of character in the OVAs, because they had to directly adapt the final volume without any of the development that lead up to it.
