For some, Doki has a bunch of problems, and the big question mark is how you feel about an unusual pink for being more like a shounen I-can-do-it-all type who only has the most superficial of weaknesss. If that's not a problem, then Mana will probably win you over and the rest of the series will fall into line, because the real growth is Regina's and jher storyline more or less hinges on her loving the pants off of Mana just for being Mana. MakoPi should probably be a bigger deal, but just has two or three episodes that really feature her (and her alone without Mana just saving her ass) in a way that help you understand her struggle, but she's generally underused and underdeveloped.
Aguri is hit-or-miss, depending on how much of a lolicon you are, though Ace is a decidedly unusual cure that's less grown-up and more a young girl's image of what a grown-up might be (so sexy, arrogant and bossy).

Heartcatch and Futari Wa are the best introduction series. Probably GoPri too, since it's airing right now.
Smile, Suite, Yes, Fresh are all solid, but have different strengths and weaknesses.
Doki, HaCha, and Splash Star are probably best to avoid as a newcomer, for various reasons. Don't start with Max Heart or GoGo either, they're sequels.
