It had comedy, it was just a really formulaic LN that schizophrenically jumped between lighthearted and fun SoL school shenanigans and overblown melodramatic 'action' arcs with virtually no humour.
The humour and 'day off' parts were decent enough, but it was let down big time by the really weak plot that only served to intrude on an otherwise solid cast dynamic without really strengthening it.
Is this new show supposed to be an LN adaptation? If it is, then I wouldn't get any hopes up, but otherwise it might have potential.

KyoAni does this only for their own LNs, this is because they basically admitted "they're not very good" when they gave them a honorable mention and not a grand prize, even if there wasn't a grand prize winner, so they try to improve it by making major changes to the source. When the source material isn't theirs (everything before Chuu2, plus Amagi), they stick to the source material and only change minor things that are needed for a good adaption (changed some locations in Hyouka, introduced some characters in different order in Nichijou, etc). With Hibike, they liked the novel so they bought the rights to animated, and there was no need to alter it. VEG will probably also be mostly unchanged, since it did win a grand prize.

I guess ep 1 and the limbo scene will decide how "generic" it is. Really though, the source material is not an indicator because KyoAni's going to change a lot of it like they did with their other LNs (Chuu2 was a love triangle in the source and look what they made from it). I'm completely serious with what I'm going to say: KyoAni is very unlikely to make a "generic" anime in the literal sense of the word. They've shown that they avoid the typical cliched scenes every anime does and tries to make their works unique in any way they can without losing the charm. You could say Chuu2 looked very generic at first, and people who haven't watched it probably still think it is, but once you watch it you see that it does things you'd never seen before in anime. It's almost as if they sit around a table and ask "how can we make this show more unique and unlike typical works?" when deciding how to adapt things. Maybe not plot-wise, but certainly in atmosphere, charm, humor, execution, and scene development in general.

They already changed it up in Amagi, having Kanye shut the door closed immediately and basically the characters reacting in a natural way instead of the typical "MC stares embarrased, girl beats him up", even the source material went kinda that way.
The way that scene goes in this novel is already different that the typical. Instead of the MC being embarrassed and Koito hitting him, the MC is 'mirin her booty and when they both notice the situation, he rushes to explain to her before she can make a scene out of it.

A show with decent writing and good visuals has the potential to be a really good show. Even a show with subpar writing and good visuals will be watchable at worst.
A show with shit visuals is almost never worth watching. Unless the writing is utterly stellar and the experience simply cannot be found elsewhere, there's no point.
At any rate, this is getting away from the point I was trying to make in the first place, which is that Kyoani fans tend to be much more interested in Kyoani's visual abilities than they are in their writing skills.

Importance of writing quality is relative to how serious or not the work is and what its intentions on the audience are.
If you found a huge plot hole in a comedy like Dumb and Dumber or something, no one would give too much of a shit and you'd just look like a fucking autist for sperging out over it because you're missing the point of the movie.
On the other hand if you found one in say some Spielberg movie where everyone went in with their most solemn serious-faces on and expected an intellectual cathartic journey, then people might get agree that it seriously undermined the whole thing.
You're seriously trying to apply the writing card to a show that has not aired yet that is about hot high school girls fighting phantoms that the studio directly bills as a comedy. Which one do you think you look like right now?

Intro to the setting/chars .. possibly pretty boring; it really depends how much time they want to spend world/char building over the long term (which would be a slow and infodump-y episode), or if they want to use instant-action / humor to distract people from bothering to analyze it (aka Marvel hero movie strategy).
Then again I could be wrong, ep1s can actually build hype instantly. For example everyone unironically was saying Sasami-san was AOTS/Y from its ep1 and it couldn't sustain that hype at all.
