This among other scenes is part of why people don't like this show.
Gundam Wing can be a hard sell, it's got plodding emotional melodrama and character development, but the same crowd that likes that is turned off by a lot of the philosophy and military babble, which is at some of it's most opaque here.
The lasting take away I have from the show is that it provides a pretty good perspective on the impact the introduction of a drone army can have on soldiers.

this. Fujos like guys who rape and beat each other. On top of that, chinese stereotype man, white muslim, and giant hair are the only really bad characters. The show has one of the best Char-clones in the series, the most edgy, 90s, homolust MC in the series, and probably one of the defining tops in yaoi in the form of Duo.
Those 3 characters are also generally likeable. Male fans like them too. The other male characters play enough of a tertiary role that you can either ignore them, or if you have a vagina, they're just extra shipping partners for the characters you like.
Think of it this way. A show like Clannad or Kanon has lots of female characters, some of whom are hideously weak in terms of plot development. They're their entirely the source is an eroge game, and these characters are in gundam almost entirely so female fans can write/draw them into porn.
If you don't think the same thing happens with moe characters being at least subtly designed for doujins in lieu of traditional fanservice like panty shots, you're naive.
