My favorite fansubbers are HorribleSub's subgroup crunchyroll and FUNimation. They must be two of the most productive teams that HorribleSub employs. I am very impressed by them, even if the quality of translation by them is not always the best.

I always liked Elysium before they died. Maybe they weren't the best but they always seemed pretty solid to me.

Other than that I just tend to avoid HorribleSubs and Commie and go for whatever has a good number of seeders and seems like it'll be good quality.

Well there is a choice if you aren't hell-bent on subbing currently-airing shows.
I was talking to another guy who insisted that his group doesn't sub things for attention or downloads but rather just for the sake of subbing things. If that were true, why doesn't his group go back and do older shows? I don't say which group it was, but it's a bit silly to just ignore unlicensed anime and then complain that HS/CR/whatever is taking everything.
