A girl who BEGINS cold towards the MC, slowly thaws over the course of the story and eventually becomes lovey-dovey towards him is a tsundere.

How writers create traits associated with tsun (cold, abrasive, aloof, abusive, violent, hostile, combative, etc) is a matter of preference. There is no difference between tsundere of the past and tsundere now. Literally no difference so it's not contemporary at all.
