I just got finished reading the manga, and what the fuck. What an awful way to end it. Why did Kasuga have to end up with Tokiwa and not fucking Saeki. Why did they have to go with the generic both characters get married and have kids? It would've been a much more fulfilling ending to just have Nakamura and Kasuga go together, even if they both end up alone, instead of bringing in some character at the end in order to finish it off.
They're all awful people, if they end with each other, no one will improv eanything.
The second half was supposed to show them maturing and moving on.

Actually, Kasuga did the right thing when rejecting Saeki, she didn't really love him, she just loved herself and saw Kasuga as a symbol for her "liberation" from the normal, boring everyday life that suffocated her. Any guys will do for her, Kasuga just happened to appear at the right time. In a sense, she thought of him as a dildo. Only with Tokiwa did Kasuga find his true love.

The ending is reasonably dissatisfying to most, but actually that's the whole point.
Kasuga and Nakamura and everyone they were involved with were at that period in their lives where they were becoming more self aware as people. They attempt to find meaning in life and define themselves as different from everyone else. That's what being a teenager is. It's chuunibyou.
It ends in the most unspectacular way because that's also a part of life. You go through your crazy youthful phase full of curiousity, confusion, and doubt, then you get over it. That's just how it is. There's no spectacular explosion that marks the end of it, it's just a gradual change. All you have left are the memories.
I understood what the message of the work was, and that the shit ending was necessary to deliver it, but that didn't make it any less unsatisfying.

The anime has some glimpses of meaning. Kasuga worshiping Saeki as some sort of angel despite knowing nothing about her feeds into the main theme.
But the anime doesn't complete the full story so it fails to get the whole picture.
The anime was just shit though. I tried to like it, but then the episode after the classroom scene where they spent a half an episode just animating Nakamura and Kasuga walking home with zero dialogue killed it for me. Couldn't defend it anymore.
I've only really gotten into anime and manga as an adult, but reading something like this really makes me wish I had did something more as a teenager. I feel like most people had some friends, or did stuff as teens but I literally went to school, went home and went to bed on repeat. Makes me really sad, even if it's a bad experience, I wish I would've done something back then.
