Yes, it has different comedy moments that appeal to different people, it does serious/action scenes extremely well for a comedy anime and its got one of the best voice casts.

Probably because it can easily transition between genres so it's accessible to a lot of different people.
They just made Gintama too powerful. He was never supposed to be some powerful ninja that could kill future aliens easily. It was supposed to be these aliens are super tough and gintama and his sword are outdated gag. But then he was killing all these guys left and rigght. That's when it stopped being funny.

Same reason why all long running shows are relatively high rated. MAL only counts the scores of people who completed it, not dropped it. If you were to finish all of those episodes, you must have fucking liked it from beginning to end and gave it a high score, otherwise you would have just dropped it.

Gintama is the best and worst of anime. It makes fun of shows for using outdated tropes and then uses them itself without giving a fuck. Most of its characters are one dimensional with one or two jokes that get beaten to death within and episode, then are beaten so severely throughout the series that they descend through the underworld and are reborn to be beaten to death again 100 episodes later. Gorilla is too much of a coward to actually kill any of the main cast so he kills by proxy by creating a character that is "close" to one of the main characters but we only see them for a few episodes if that before they die. The power levels make no sense, the humor is low brow and is based on dated references or toilet humor. The jokes are forced, the characters are forced, the drama is forced and the overall plot is nonsense. Even with all of its flaws, I fucking love Gintama. This show kept me from killing myself when my life was going to shit. I don't know what it is but watching this show makes me happy and it is far more than the sum of its parts. I care about all the characters. This show makes me feel like I actually have friends, and I love them all.

Same here. Watched a couple episodes and didn't laugh once (first episode and meat pot episode). Felt certain, based on its MAL rank, admittedly, that it must get better at some point. Nope; even fans will mention repeatedly that it never really develops a continuous plot, and that you apparently need to watch 50 episodes before it becomes watchable (What kind of show requires that?). And even then its episodic and with similar, unfunny humor.
Youtube'd what was supposed to be one of the best fights in the series, and absolutely nothing stood out about it.

Hijikata being a cow was actually the most unexpected thing all around, for me. What I hated though is that she looked like Hijikata, just with a pair of braids and the body of a fridge. Or the part where genderbent Hijikata is fucked by hemorrhoids ninja.
Still, no genderbent Madao-Katsura was also kinda disappointing.
