I sympathized with her, mostly because I have a somewhat similar personality in that I don't really "get" why I am alive. So while I understand how that sort of personality is annoying to deal with I could see things from her perspective. The show itself, and the rules of the universe it existed in were pretty dumb, but I liked Isla enough as a character to finish it out, and be effected by her death. I still occasionally tear up at transom when I think about the Ferris wheel scene.

What went wrong was a lack of central focus.
This show should have been about a group of kids who have to get from point A to point B while interacting with the planet they live on and they people who live there. They should have served as interlopers in various conflicts that had nothing to do with them, but help the affected people reach a conclusion. Greater emphasis would be placed on their individual characters to compensate for lack of a clear antagonist. All mechs and military subplots should have been dropped, as well as whatever the fuck that final climax was.

While Roman winning the bowl and bread coming full circle may have been cathartic and interesting, they are ultimately meaningless points to the story overall.
For bread, I'll go a little further. Her defection is supposed to make us feel good, but ultimately, what good is that supposed to do the protagonists, who have done most of the work already. The answer is she wouldn't do much good. How did they fix that problem? By giving her an absurd role of fending off the army single-handedly. This led to one of the most absurd fight scenes with bread bombs, melon bread grenades, and dual-wielding LMGs. On it's own it's hilarious, schlocky and stupidly entertaining, but within the tonal context of that episode, it's horridly out-of-place and without verisimilitude.
