Why is this such a popular Anime/Manga again?
It's basically just a moe gag show with a rather retarded twist (which I'm pretty sure everybody on planet earth knows at this point but I'm not going to spoil)
Like, seriously though, why is it so popular? Do people really find the twist that funny? All the characters and jokes were just boring to me, I made it to episode 12 and had to stop watching it was that boring.

Interesting characters that aren't overexposed, an intriguing story (though it is very, very hard it will live up to everyone's expectations), girls are hot, and Kyon is a very a good protagonist.
Plus the dances, the catchy music and the fact that KyoAni promoted the shit out of it in Lucky Star. Haruhi "made" KyoAni, believe it or not.

This is probably the majority of the reason. Whenever there's an overhyped anime series that I can't get into, 9 times out of 10 it's because the fanbase is obsessed with the female characters. It really inflates people's view of a show when they're attracted to the characters.
