I'm giving Bleach a try, I'm currently at episode 29 and is not that interesting, the story is not that engaging and the characters are average. Sometimes I don't get how this is so popular.

The story gets better once they reach Soul Society. Then it gets a bit better, but then it gets worse. Once the anime ends it gets much, much better actually in the manga. Avoid the fillers.

While I don't disagree with those points, when taken further its just asking "why bother watching anime at all?" since its 95% adaptions. Some people just like seeing things move and hearing the seiyuu and soundtrack.
Personally I typically only read the manga if I really enjoyed the anime and want to continue from where it ended, pr if something really neat gets posted on /a/ like Wizards Soul.

I can't honestly say "don't bother watching the "not filler" because even that's too long, since I've watched One Piece about 3 times on certain streams some people will know about, but seriously, don't watch it unless you have nothing better to do.
Hunter x Hunter is probably better as this kind of thing, as is Yu Yu Hakusho (yes, even though the latter is "motherfucking tournaments: the anime". Even moreso than Dragon Ball. ) H x H has the advantage of diverse sorts of games, contests that are really, about killing a motherfucker, and in the games and just straight "I'mma fuck this bitch up" fights, a fair amount of strategy and discussion of strategy.
Some will find the discussion in the anime during the Ant arc interminable because it gets slow, but others will appreciate it as actual character development and exposition. The fights themselves are often less important than getting in the heads of the characters. It's something you usually miss in visual works, and while it slows things down, it's also interesting.

It starts slow. Picks up when Ichigo fights Kenpachi. Gets hella cool when Ichigo learns MAH BANKAI and fight Byakuya. Skip the filler arc. Go to the arrancar stuff. Basically just watch any part with Ichigo or a captain fighting. The characters are shit and to be honest Bleach is just really shitty and should have ended where the anime does. The manga has gotten so awful that I can't even begin to understand why people would even consider reading this garbage that Kubo vomits up every week.
