Episode VII didn't really look that much better though. That snoke guy still looked fake as hell.
If anything anime stands a chance of being able to actually work better in 3D than real-life modeling ever can, because we expect so fewer movements of the face that someone talking doesn't really look fake or not with anime.
The main fucking problem with 3D in anime is for some reason they render at like 10 fps to try to make it blend in with hand-drawn, but only serve to make it stick out more because it's going way slower on what would be in-between/key frame transitions.

Someone posted a video of Guilty Gear's 3DCG that looks like 2D in a Berserk thread a few days ago. It was great.

3DCG that looks like 2D has been doable for some time, it just costs way more than traditional 2D (shit, Naruto UNS2 for the PS3 was somewhat good looking).
The 3DCG we see in anime that looks like (relative) crap is because its cheap, and while 3DCG gets cheaper it still doesn't look as good 2d.
The biggest issue is motion, which always looks unnatural in cheap 3dcg.
