Actually, Future Trunks is simply that much stronger than Mecha Frieza. His sword isn't special, we know what happened to King Cold. We've already seen that a blast from Goku does more damage to Frieza than Namek's destruction anyways. Frieza's naturally durable body is no match for Future Trunks.

I just don't quite get how training works in DBZ. In his own timeline the situation was hopeless: he could take years training and still wouldn't be able to stop the androids, but if he trains with Vegeta or 2 years, he gets way stronger than the androids. And he isn't the only one, we all know the Tagoma thing, etc. People complain about powerlevels, but the most inconsistent thing in the show is the training. It's just a plot device to make friends and foes as strong as they need to be.
