The Akito movies are okay. They're just different and more like typical mecha (except for episodes 3 and apparently 5, which get kind of crazy). Not enough time to make a huge impression though and too many delays.

It's not that the second season was better, it's that it was necessary. It had the climax and resolution. Without it the series as a whole would be worse, even if the second season was also less consistent.
