To be fair, in DBZ Goku actually learned the lesson to not underestimate his opponents, but in Super he's back to that, in this last episode he fucking talked with Frieza about the weather after he killed Piccolo and torture Gohan.

He faces off against king piccolo, finally believes that he truly did it with 3 of his limbs broken. He starts crying in disbelief. He still can't bring back his best friend but he beat his killer. Best moment truly.

Goku barely wins in DBZ canon.
Gohan crushed Vegeta and defeated Cell.
He needed fusion and the ki of the universe to destroy Buu.
He loses loads of Budokai.
The only real win he had was with Freeza in DBZ. He won more in DB (against Great King Piccolo and Piccolo Junior).

Goku lost against Raditz, Vegeta, Android 19, Cell and Buu. I'm not sure what your point is. Goku lost way more fights in the latter 2/3s of the series than the first third.
