Maybe you'll like the movie. There's a lot of people who didn't liked the series very much, but enjoyed the movie regardless because of the difference in tone, pacing and theme that it has in relation to it.
Honestly, I think that both the series and the movie are great and that one complements the other, especially because much of the movie's impact comes from the fact that it serves as a contrast to the series in a bunch of ways.

I think that the characters are very charismatic compared to most series, especially Kyon and Haruhi. They may seem like your generic cynical guy and the generic upbeat girl, but I think that the anime manages their respective archetypes in a way that sets them apart from the rest. I also think that the fast-paced nature of the show(that's actually used to mimic Haruhi's character)makes the slice of life episodes much more bearable than on your average comedy. Haruhi episodes always gave me the impression that 40 or 50 minutes passed due to how much stuff happened, while in most shows the episodes seem to end in just a few minutes. That and I think that the anime is legitimately funny, but then again, that's just me.
If you are thinking about giving it another chance, I'd say to do it in chronological order. My opinion is that it can grow on you with time, but it's understandable with you don't want to. You don't need force yourself to watch something you don't like.
On a related note, I generally don't like Kyoani shows. I thought that Clannad, Hyouka, Chuuni, FMP and Tamako were all meh. Haruhi(and K-ON to a extent) is their only show that I actually liked.

Not that anon, but I found Haruhi to just have a weird charm to it. It's the kind of show that's easy to get nostalgic about. In terms of what sets it apart, I would say execution and an actually good cast, but that's subjective isn't it? Honestly though, even as a fan, I can see Haruhi doesn't hold up very well today, and is the kind of series that's best to watch when your just starting off watching anime. What you described in >>134822113 is episode 5 in broadcast order, so you were already watching it in broadcast. The movie is pretty much unanimously liked, but I don't know if you'd enjoy it if you didn't like the main series at all the first place. You need to be at least a little invested in the characters. Most people find it worth the watch though, maybe at least try season 1 and see if you enjoyed it enough to want to continue after that. It's only 14 episodes after all.
