I always thought it was lazy to have characters that should speak a variety of languages (be they alien languages or real ones) all just conveniently be able to speak and understand English, but this show made me realize how cumbersome that would be.

The original lines work in Japanese because the show takes place in Japan and the lines are being recorded in Japanese. Stein thinks this guy only speaks English because he's black so he tries to speak English.
How would that work in a literal translation? Would you have Stein try speaking in Swahili? Doing a literal translation would just require unnecessary and convoluted extra context while the way it was done just makes you go "lol, this guy isn't used to black people".
How about dubs that aren't better than the original, but still good enough to be watchable. While I would never recommend someone watching them for the first time to watch them dubbed, Code Geass, Eva, and Durarara all have dubs that I've ended up watching withfriendsand genuinely got a good degree of enjoyment out of. Lelouch's English voice was top-notch, and Celty's voice was qt as fuck. Not to mention any Ghibli movie (of course, those typically get A-list American actors because Ghibli is actually marketable to a non-niche audience in the West).

But Japanese voice actors are actually famous and are judged harshly. There's simply more people listening to them so they have higher standards to fill. There's also like 8 VAs in America that actually get roles so the voices all sound the same. It's like having three KanaHanas in every show.
I will say that a lot of the problem with American VAs comes more from the awful scripts they get. Japanese doesn't always translate very well and it really shows. Probably another reason Ghibli dubs don't outright suck.
The only series that I've watched the dub for was Big O and that was because my friends wanted to watch it dubbed. I'd rather not watch dubbed anime. Good dubs do exist but I can't be bothered to watch them.
