Well, they straight up say that artificial exters are grown from cloned cells and that Momoka is an artificial exter. So no matter how you look at it Momoka is technically a clone. You could argue that there was only ever one Momoka, which is the same one in both Mirei's flashbacks and the present though.
Enhanced mode and clones are not at odds with each other either. It could be an earlier experiment or an attempt to combat the artificial exters. It's obviously more primitive technology since Mirei needs to take medicine to not die or whatever.
The brainwash theory just doesn't work for me. If Momoka was simply brainwashed I don't think Mirei would have given up on her like this. Mirei's flashbacks and reaction don't really make sense if Momoka was just captured and brainwashed either. She's fixated on that one war flashback as seemingly the last moment they were together, but at the same time doesn't same time doesn't seem surprised to see her show up again. I don't think that would be the moment she obsesses over if they were just captured and Momoka brainwashed.
That's just the way the makes the most sense of me. I could be completely, totally wrong though. Nothing in this show after episode 3 has been particularly logical or well written, so who knows.

It's certainly a possibility. I think it makes less sense when you try to think about why they would make artificial exters though. One reason would be that it's easier to mass produce an army of robots than it would be to create an army of humans. I'm pretty sure a character mentioned that human liberators/exters were forbidden to be used in war too and so artificial ones could be a way to use a loop hole. Augmented humans would go against those, but those are just motive assumptions of course.
And still, as I said before, I don't think Mirei's reaction would be what it was if Momoka was just augmented.

How would you expect anyone in Feste to understand the difference? Literally the only thing most people knew about Akira was that:
- Akira's the only male on the island
- Akira promised them freedom
- Akira gathered them together at Feste
I doubt every single one of them was a near-rape victim that got saved like Kasumi, so they knew very little about Akira due to how much she shared with them. When you learn that someone you already knew quite little about was lying about one of their misleading traits, you tend to assume the worst.
Charlotte, on the other hand, from the perspective of the people at Feste, looked like this:
- A strict disciplinarian who's a hardass, but an effective enforcer because there haven't been too many incidents from what we've seen
- Was leader of her own group before joining up with Akira
- Cared enough about justice to expose Akira for lying to them
Although many stupid decisions have been made, from the point of view of the characters, choosing Charlotte over Akira wasn't a bad decision with the limited information they had.

Hell, most of us thought that Akira would be the final villain when we knew about as much as the rest of the characters on Feste. Their sentiments about Akira was probably similar to those of us who thought she was the final boss initially.
It wasn't until episode 7 that we were sure that wasn't the case. None of the girls on Feste knew about Akira's side of things in episode 7.

I agree with you for the most part. There are a couple of things though. Akira's rule and behaviour were obviously good enough for her to be idolised and it's incredibly unlikely that Charlotte's reckless and callous attitude doesn't come up often. I don't think it's a good image when your rebel leader is aided by a giant, black, shapeshifting monster that just arrived on the island yesterday or when they crucify the old leader either. That doesn't say "this is a good guy we can trust" to me.

Some people did but that is 100% meta-knowledge. We know that this is a story and that there will be a villain and that the villain can only come from a very very small number of people. The characters do not know that they are in a story with a set cast. It's just everyday life for them. Nothing we've seen Akira do in the entire series was sinister at all. The only thing Akira has done that you could argue is bad is make sure Mirei and Mamori went with Lady Lady into the factory and literally nobody but Lady Lady know about that and we don't know enough about Akira's reasoning for that.

As someone who's been following most of the VDM threads, that was a pretty common sentiment from what I've seen. Lady Lady's comment about Akira being a liar/hypocrite was what started things and Sri's in episode 5 added fuel to the fire when Akira was established to be strong enough to stop Kasumi and Charlotte.
As for Momoka, there were very few people who considered her an endboss. From the profile at the time, most /a/nons just thought that she'd be a mischievous bitch that liked picking on innocent girls like Mamori and thought her primary role was to just be a part of a love triangle.
Anyways, the point is that when the only thing we knew about Akira was that she was powerful and she was lying, most of /a/ was already doubting Akira's true motives. The girls at Feste are not stupid to think the same way. They only seem stupid to some /a/nons because episode 7 gave them more information than the girls at Feste.

Charlotte was a strict disciplinarian and Akira's crime of having led everyone on has finally been revealed. Exposing Akira out in public is a good reminder of Akira's crimes.
I guess the fairer thing that Charlotte could have done was to give Akira a trial, but Akira would have been screwed even harder considering her under the table dealings with Lady Lady and Torino would have been revealed. At that point, Akira's protests that she was doing this for the sake of Feste would have just sounded like a charismatic villain trying to make a final plea for their innocence. Basically, Akira did a REALLY good job to lock herself as a villain in everyone's eyes if a single of her secrets were ever to be revealed and Momoka took full advantage of that to turn Charlotte against her.

The core problem of Akira's rule was that it ultimately only worked out because people were willing to trust Akira.
From Akira's speeches, it seems like most most of the effectiveness of Akira's rule came from the promise if freedom if they followed her guidelines. As episode 7 revealed, Charlotte was already beginning to suspect that there might not be any observers watching them to grant them freedom. However, anyone who suspected that decided to believe the words of the dashing prince that saved them from the wild lawless lands over their personal unfounded suspicions.
A little later, it's revealed that the perfect prince was a liar who wasn't even a prince. At that point, it becomes far easier to believe your own suspicions over Akira's words. If Akira spent more time building a sense of community so that people were more willing to cooperate without the pretense of some fake watchers granting freedom for good behavior, then maybe a few characters could have overlooked the fact that she was a woman.

Anyway, regardless of how contrived it may have been, I thought the ramp-up of the fight between Mirei and Kasumi was great. Kasumi on the ropes until her girlfriend is threatened, at which point she goes all out, only to be blown up by Mirei's all-out, which then falters due to its self-damaging nature. Lots of back and forth.

Akira's rule was based entirely on being the gallant prince who would lead the girls off the island and back home. We've seen throughout the series how Akira plays up that image in order to get her way. And now with that image having been shown false, all the people she was lying to and manipulating feel angry and betrayed. And with good reason.
Akira may (arguably) have had good intentions, but the way she went about achieving them was very shitty.

It's interesting that from everything we've seen throughout the series, Mirei's combat ability is not actually that great. Not that she's weak, but she's not really noticeably more powerful than anyone else the way you'd expect the "legendary soldier" to be. Her dedication and strength of will seem to be her strongest features, rather than her actual ability to fight.
