Are Miyazaki films overrated?

No. They are the best anime has to offer.

I always figured that was his angle. To have more of an artistic approach with simple story lines.

What else would you watch anime for? Unless you go in wanting/expecting moeshit.

I honestly feel it's less this and more "Miyazaki is the only name I know" going on.

That said, /a/ would probably hate his shit regardless, especially Spirited Away, simply because it's Miyazaki. It'd probably be praised around these parts if it wasn't ever popular.

His works after Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke felt pretty weak compared to his old stuff, with Ponyo being totally forgettable and Howl feeling like he was going down a checklist of what the audience expects from his work, but as a whole he fucking earned his critical acclaim. His movies are gorgeous and as far as family friendly films are concerned he has the best out there, having just as much to offer for the teens and adults going into them as the kids.
He gets some criticism for his works being simplistic and not getting super ambitious plot-wise but he's always put a bigger emphasis on creating a world and getting straight to the the emotional core of the story, and I feel like it works well for movies like Kiki and Spirited Away.

His earlier stuff is a much watch for anyone who calls themselves a fan of anime or animation as a medium, regardless of your feelings on the man personally.

People who claim he's overrated like mediocre anime such as LOGH. They still believe story and characters are of the utmost important. They use terms such as style over substance. They are infantile about film. It's why their favourite anime will always be merely a narrative told through animation. Spirited Away and Totoro are experiences, they are real art.

Generally no, his movies are literally the most consistently best out of what Japan has to offer. Note "CONSISTENTLY". Because even geniuses like Oshii and Kon and Takahata have had their stumbles. Miyazaki's been pretty much fully stumbling since Spirited Away, but his filmography is so much more vast than the aforementioned names that it doesn't even matter. For the most part, I think Miyazaki is great. Not the best in any category, but the most consistently high.

He's also extremely lucky that he has people that try to give his works proper exposure, like Suzuki and Lasseter. There are a lot of other skilled creators like him in the anime industry, such as Nagano or Tomino, but those tools for exposure are what sets him apart from the likes of them. I'm under the impression that if he had his choice, he would lock himself up in his basement and make auteur movies for no one but himself to watch, just like Nagano and his Gothicmade. Like most auteurs, he's the type of person who doesn't give a damn about money or awards or popularity. And I'd be okay with that because the Nausicaa manga, which he made primarily for himself, was a far better work than any of his movies.

Yes you know what i mean you fucking memester, its one of the few films in all their history that he didn't have a big hand in as he was working on the wind rises at the same time. Miyazaki is talented but his time is up, he's not putting out the same creative things he used to in his prime.

This is the first Ghibli film that I didn't wanna see based on the trailer. This animation style is trash compared to their other work. Disney, pixar, dreamworks all make the most uninspired films in existence though. >Are Miyazaki films overrated?

Some of them are and some of them aren't: Miyazaki made a lot of films with varying substance but unquestionable quality.

Ghibli films are WELL MADE, there is nothing wrong with saying that, this is a quantitative vs quality kind of statement and miyazaki has made nothing but animated films with fantastic production quality and effort put into them.
This is something that can't be said very often.

But back to the point, Miyazaki made some SOLID fucking films: Nausicaa: valley of the wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Monoke, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away & Howl's Moving Castle are all (I think at least) his greatest films and in general some of the best anime films japan has produced.

Miyazaki though got something of a "pixar pass": he made a bunch of fantastic films during a period of unhampered creativity, but he got old and he got afraid of taking risks and eventually started playing it safe and stupid- which was still held by his own standard, but he generally "peeked" at spirited away.

Miyazaki has FANTASTIC animation skills, directing and really understands motion, body language and is just- he's a fantastic fucking artist, but he's gotten OLD and he HATES his audience and he HATES the west, so there's that.
That's my rant.

If you're going to deny Miyazaki's genuine technical skill for the trade you're being completely fucking retarded, but it's completely true Miyazaki's film quality has dipped in noticeable quality- he can't pull it off anymore.

>>
What's the consensus on When Marnie was There? The trailer looked well animated.
>>
>>134696989
As a whole, maybe, but his best works deserve all this praise they get. Reason being that he has a wider and more diverse body of work than any animation director ever. Of course different works will have different appeal. I prefer takahata's directorial style but I definitely think Spirited Away and Mononoke-hime both belong in any list of the top 10 animated works of all time. They are beyond beautiful, absolutely mesmorizing. It's a meme here to hate on Miyazaki but that just proves how bizarre and out of touch anime fans are with good filmmaking/art

>>134702112
>Nagano or tomino
You had me hooked up until this point, I love both of them but I doubt they would come close to the film's Miyazaki has done. Tomino in particular has had MANY opportunities, this coming from someone who loves 0079 and Turn A
>>
>>134703060
Well animated but poorly written and a bitch for a MC.
>>
Not really, his biggest problem is the same kind of repetition people get from Disney or Pixar. I like Takahata better but Ghibli wouldn't have worked without both of them.

Spirited Away is vastly overrated via the Oscar though.

He's pretty much Japanese Disney, in the sense that they're very enjoyable films that anyone can enjoy, but will be utmost hated in esoteric specific circles due to their popularity.

You can 'prove' anything is shit if you deconstruct it enough, but a work's meter of judgement should just be how enjoyable it is.

>>134702969
Please use the term liberal correctly.
>>
>>134703141
The question isn't if he's good or not, but if he's overrated or not.
Learn the difference.
And Miyazaki being treated as if he was a genius director when his movies, while good and well made, aren't anything special in most cases, yes, that's the definition of overrated.
>>
Yes.
>>
>>134703079
>Tomino in particular has had MANY opportunities

The problem with Tomino is that all his works are TV series, and all the movies he makes are either spinoffs or condensed versions of said TV series. He's never had the budget or time of a Miyazaki movie, which is okay since that's not the type of anime he wants to make. He's also a terrible scriptwriter, but Miyazaki isn't exactly much better. But his sense of cinematography and world building is absolutely unparalleled.

Even then, it's not hard to look for other talents. Imagawa, another protege of Tomino for example. An absolute genius of a director, equally detail oriented as Miyazaki and Takahata, but also a far superior script-writer. And everything he's made is a financial failure just because none of his works outside of GR and G Gundam get any exposure. At the end of the day, exposure is all it really boils down to.

For example, it's an absolute mystery to me how Shinkai became as popular as he is today when there were at least 3 other people doing the same shit as him before, and better too. The anime industry has lots of talent, but very few get exposure, and those that do aren't always the best.
>>
>>134703196
I know, just saying. If someone finds that watchable, this was more watchable. And I actually liked the animation of Kaguyahime
>>
>>134703218
>The question isn't if he's good or not, but if he's overrated or not.
Don't tell me that, tell it to the guy who said "all style no substance".

I just don't him insinuating girls like the movies because they're simple minded, and that's he's intelligent because he doesn't.
>>
>>134703348
Oh sorry, I quoted the last post of the thread to bring up the quick reply and forgot to cancel the quote.
It was generally directed to the whole thread that's mostly responding as if the question was "is myiazaki good?".

But I agree with that. Generally girls have a hard time following more complex stuff and prefer simple linear things. Not all, but most do.
>>
>>134703079
>>134703274
As for Nagano, I can't really judge his directing skills until I see Gothicmade. As an artist though, I think he is equals with Miyazaki, especially when it comes to drawing creative reinterpretations of eastern and western design and settings. Of course, being a good artist doesn't equal a good director. But as FSS shows, unlike most other people in the anime industry, he has a strong sense of vision and creativity.

Tomino has had some very good proteges. Too bad they suffered his curse of obscurity (likewise, Miyazaki's protege, Anno, inherited his popularity and is currently abusing it in the worst way possible)

>>
>>134703440
>>134703079
Not the guy you're talking to, but the thing that sets Miyazaki apart from others like Tomino and co is that he is not only a skilled artist, but has had extensive experience working in the anime industry doing everything from key animation to scripts and directing well before he even made Nausicaa. Simply put, when the time came for him to finally show his artistic vision, he pulled it off effortlessly thanks to years of experience, as opposed to pulling a Makoto Shinkai. I also agree that the whole "exposure" that you mentioned here >>134702112 plays a big part of it too, but regardless, Miyazaki was very competent, and his strict devotion to his craft is compelling, even if it makes him look like an egotistical asshole.
>>
>>134703618
I was thinking more of experiences I had with girls and normal western movies and books. Also who the fuck was talking about characterization, that's the least complex aspect to grasp in any media, and women have the evolutionary advantage in that cause they're supposed to be better at empathizing.

Myiazaki movies aren't complex, and are almost entirely based on the characterization, so of course girls would like them more than story driven, complex movies.
It's also one of the biggest reasons girls are usually less in the sci-fi genre, they can't handle the complexity.

Your violent answers and getting triggered at mentioning that girls are worse at something is textbook tumblr feminist landwhale reaction, and you should fuck off there among your similar.
Get schooled.

>>
>>134703621
I'm not sure if experience is that important. Look at Hosoda, he's very experienced but goddamn are his movies generic. Well-made, but they're nowhere nearly as unique and creative as a Miyazaki movie. He's actually more comparable to Takahata, but with less emphasis on making kids cry, and nowhere nearly as detail-oriented. And when it comes down to it, directors like Miyazaki and Kon and Oshii will always be more remembered than the likes of Takahata and Hosoda because of their visuals. Anime is a visual medium, you can have the most well-written movie in the world but it won't mean anything unless it looks unique and appealing. Which is why Miyazaki can get away with a movie with a script as wretched as Ponyo's.

And it's not like Nagano or Imagawa are inexperienced either. Nagano's worked as a writer and designer for L-Gaim and most Gundam series with Tomino (Z, ZZ, CCA) all the way back in the early 80's, and Imagawa's long-ass history of things he's worked on can't be denied either. They're both very experienced industry veterans who understand precisely how animation works. But they're not very well known in the west because no one ever advertises them anymore. And if your anime doesn't sell, you're worth nothing in the eyes of the anime industry (it's a different case with Nagano because he's an isolationist nutjob).

You're new on /a/, as it's evident from your way of writing, and you stick out like a sore thumb.

You're the one changing argument dude. You talk about characterization as it has anything to do with complexity.
And if you think we weren't talking about Miyazaki movies in a Myiazaki thread you have serious brain damage.
And girls are statistically dumber, deal with it.
>>
>>134696989
Yes. They're still great though.
Kiki's Delivery Service is still the best Miyazaki movie.
>>
>>134703841
My point isn't solely about experience, but experience working in various fields. Miyazaki has worked in literally every single field of animation other than making music and serious voice acting.

Nagano is a good artist and comes up with neat concepts and decent stories, but he's never worked as an animator or director and can't understand those subtle nuances of animation, and being the one-man army that he is, he's probably also not very good at managing a large group of people, which is why Gothicmade was mostly just him and a couple animators slaving away. Imagawa is the opposite- he understands visual cues and pacing, but holy fuck the man can't come up with an original idea of his own. If you could combine the two into one person, you would have someone who could rival Miyazaki. But that's clearly not going to happen.
>>
Totoro is his best movie. If you dislike Totoro not only you have shit taste, but you're probably a bad person too.

Well, nothing in >>134703618 was about Miyazaki. If anyone is brain damaged it sure ain't me.

>You talk about characterization as it has anything to do with complexity.
What show do you think qualifies as complex?

>And girls are statistically dumber, deal with it.
You're probably dumber than the statistically dumber girls.

>He's also a terrible scriptwriter, but Miyazaki isn't exactly much better
I wouldn't go that far (granted I haven't seen ponyo or kaze tachinu yet). Tomino has written some retarded stuff that Miyazaki's worst writing is still way above, even some of the cringeworthy exposition in naussicaa. It's apples and oranges comparing them though, two widely different careers. I would like to see a high budget tomino film if he had good staff to reign him in, but I don't think it would be a masterpiece. As for imagawa, I do love him and find it sad how horrible his luck has been. I wish he had better opportunities and am dearly hoping he gets put in a directors chair again. he has a very western style . One of my favorite aspects of ghibli is how distinctly Japanese the film's are, and I think the reflections of traditional spirituality and sense of nostalgia strongly contribute to how moving they are. There is a strong house vision from the studio that gives the film's a very unique feel. Last comment on Anno, he could have become an amazing anime director, he has the directorial talent, but the combination of post Eva burnout/dissatisfaction and development of digital film technology led him to stop giving a fuck about making great anime. I'm still banking on the rebuilds being a cash grab to fund future arthouse projects.

>>134703621
His success is a combination of incredible luck and incredibly hard work. He had enough time working and anime experience by the early 80s to get funding for those early projects. Had he been born ten years later and come to maturity as an artist in the early 90s ghibli never would have happened with the economy and the way the industry changed over that decade.

I'm half asleep typing on my phone, I'll check if this thread is up tomorrow

Confirmed for never talking to girls past a superficial level. Don't you have posts to be making on r9k?? Your generalizations are retarded enough to fit

This might be a stupid question, but why is Fantasia kept in such high regards? Literally everyone that has watched it calls it one of the best, if not the best, animated movie.
It seems really surprising to me that so many people came to such a consensus.
>>
>>134704255
Great visual storytelling, excellent animation, timeless music, etc. Not that western animation has enough works with that vision and appeal to compare it to.

I'm pretty sure both Nagano and Imagawa were taught the basics of directing by Tomino. Even then, there's no right or wrong way to direct things. Miyazaki for example, personally redraws key frames whenever something doesn't fit his standards. There are very few directors who would do that sort of thing. While I do acknoweldge that Imagawa is not super creative when it comes to making new concepts, he's very good at retelling concepts in refreshing new ways. I would say the closest person to his style of directing is Anno. And what killed Imagawa wasn't that his works were rehashes, it was because he was working with Intellectual Properties that very few people give a shit about. Many people didn't even watch Giant Robo just because they didn't like how he stuck with the original art style of the manga. As a result, it face numerous production delays and bombed, as well as pretty much everything else Imagawa has ever worked on for similar reasons. Nagano is... very unique, to say the least. He's already an artist who can draw everything by himself, but he is someone who would rather re-invent the animation process rather than follow the norm. Gothicmade feels to me like he's testing the waters with his weird theory to understand the animation process more personally before he goes all-out. People tend to forget that before FSS was published, he made a very simple manga about rock and roll for about a year to understand how to draw manga soon after L-Gaim. And then we all know what happened right after.

Whatever the case, I think both of them can easily match up to the quality of Miyazaki's works. They're not the same as him, but they have their own unique talents, and with the right push, I think they can achieve the same level of quality.

As for exposure, no one can compare to Miyazaki until they get a deal with Disney.

Except all my reasoning is based on when I watched some movies with past or the current girlfriend.
Only one girl I ever met was a good talk and interesting to be with/ watch movies with.
But whatever you say, kohai.

What about Satoshi Kon?
>>
>>134704523
That speaks more to how much social exposure you get and the types of circles you move in. Then again, apparently I'm talking to a manchild who thinks science fiction makes for interesting cinema
>>
>>134704253
>I wouldn't go that far (granted I haven't seen ponyo or kaze tachinu yet)

Wind Rises is very oversimplified as a story, and Ponyo and its script and characters are even more nonsensical than Tomino's worst. Imagine someone like Reccoa being the mother of a 5-year-old. That's kind of how Ponyo is as a movie.

I'd like to hope that Anno is just using the Rebuilds as a cash cow for future projects, but it feels more to me like he had an original idea for it and then just lost steam as time went by. If the next Godzilla movie he makes is any good, then that would be just further prove this theory, since he's far more passionate about toku than anime. But if it's a failure, then I think I might lose more than a little faith in him.

>>134704596
Kon is okay, but I feel like Paprika was when he started to lose some grip, because it felt so sloppy compared to his older works. But he died before he could prove otherwise.

If you have the emotional capacity of a 12 year old

Because people couldn't agree on anything else, so they choose something based around classical music in order to go along with the idea that the film is elevated by this.

The book series is excellent but it wasn't easy to adapt. That's the same reason Nausicaa got so fucked up despite the manga being Illiad-tier literature. The movies are pretty and you can take them as elaborate fanart for the books.

The romantic subplot was alright but to me it was most about having passion and converting that into tangible things and not just ideas.
I felt it succeeded at that well.
