it's a manga that doesn't try to reinvent tropes and cliches but accepts them.
The basic plot is simple and straight forward journey of a hero/anti hero. The art direction is just top notch gothic-macabre which serves as an excellent backdrop against the childish fantasy elements that are incorporated into the manga. It's good because it isn't pretentious, provides contrasting themes and because of the extensive character arcs, the reader is heavily invested in the fate of the main character.
The latter is very important. Few manga focus so heavily on the development of the people in the story and instead use them as set pieces to enact the author's fantasy. Guts is a person driven by human suffering and folly. We watched him grow up, lose everything and adapt as a human being. These traits culminate in the reader desiring not to see him succeed but instead to see a resolution to the life-long tension that is Gut's life.
Not alot of dark fantasy manga, much less good fantasy manga in general, so Berserk kinda clicked really well.
There are plenty of things as good or better than Berserk though. I am enjoying Innocent and Vagabond way more right now.

Its literally only good until after Conviction arc. From happy witch treehouse onwards Berserk gets shittier and shittier. Companions suck, berserk armour sucks, Guts and Griffith are completely separated so the story barely progresses

Honestly, Dororo's very short and has an official translation, I'd recommend getting a copy. It's only three volumes, or one large one (which is what I got).
I think it was all scanned and uploaded somewhere, if you just search around you'll probably find it eventually.
